2.2 to MJ Guptill, extra bounce catches Guptill by surprise. He was looking to loft this one, comes on at an in-between length. Does not really go through with the shot, just checks his push and chips it in the direction of mid-off, off the top part of the bat. 20/1 8.5 to KS Williamson, pops a catch to wide slip. Rahane does well to hold on to it, it came on at an awkward height to him. Short of a length, just not enough room for Williamson as he looks to open up and punch, sends a thick edge flying in the direction of the fielder. 63/2 8.6 to NT Broom, simple edge. Shami is reaping the benefits of some tight bowling. Tempting the batsman with a slightly wide delivery but it is not short enough. Tries to punch with a half-angled bat and gets a mild but clear edge as he is stapled to the crease. Easy catch for MS Dhoni. 63/3

14.3 to CJ Anderson, Anderson comes charging down again and Bhuvneshwar has dropped it short again. It is also angled across so Anderson isn't exactly close enough to be playing the pull, has to fetch it from some distance, gets an inside edge that flattens leg stump. 86/4 34.6 to TG Southee, dragged on. Takes a stride across to get outside the line of this one and it jags back in. Tries to punch with a big gap between bat and pad and the ball comes in to take the inside edge and flatten the stumps. 166/9 38.4 to TA Boult, caught at extra cover. Boult backs away to this back of a length ball outside off. Backs himself to slap it over the in-field and makes decent connection but perhaps did not get the room he was looking for. Doesn't get the elevation as a result and finds Shami who snaffles it with both hands over his head. Made it seem so casual that it almost seemed like a one-handed take. 189/10

20.3 to L Ronchi, follows the floater with the arm ball and rattles the stumps of Ronchi. Flat and darted in on off, Ronchi stays leg side of the ball, aims a cut, but does not make contact. Good variations from Jadeja. Too close for the cut though the length was ripe for the shot. 110/5 22.3 to C de Grandhomme, De Grandhomme dares to dance down the track. Jadeja drags his length back and pushes it wider outside off, ensures the batsman can't reach out and make contact with the ball. Dhoni does the rest behind the stumps. NZ six down and sinking. 116/6
6 | 0 | 32 | 1 | 5.33 | 17 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
25.4 to MJ Santner, holes out to long-on. NZ in danger of being bowled out at the Oval. Santner wants to hit out. He charges down the track, but is nowhere close to the pitch of the ball. He intended to loft it, but ends up dragging it away to the left of Jadeja at long-on. Success for Ashwin on return from injury. NZ throwing their wickets away; instead of hanging onto them. 126/7
4 | 0 | 11 | 1 | 2.75 | 13 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | |
32.5 to AF Milne, short ball, gets big on Milne. Besides, it is angled in on leg stump, so Milne is tucked up for room. Goes through with a hook and gets a glove that is held easily by MS Dhoni. New Zealand eight down. 156/8 |

4.5 to AM Rahane, Rahane has been bounced out! He attempts another hook. Short and angled in at the chest, Rahane finds Southee's new-ball partner - Boult - at square-ish long leg. Rahane wasn't in control of this either. 30/1

20.6 to KD Karthik, Karthik's innings was scratchier than a pair of undercrackers. Dug in short and outside off, looks like Karthik was rushed into a pull. He can't get on top of it, ends up dragging the ball to midwicket. Perishes for a nine-ball duck. 104/3

18.6 to S Dhawan, Swatted straight into the hands of Anderson at midwicket. Hip-high short ball outside off, ripe to be smashed. Dhawan pulls it flat and hard to Anderson, who takes it and falls on his backside. Some joy for NZ. Who's next? Dhoni did not have his pads on. Karthik or Jadhav?. 98/2
