  • It was Australia's 474th and Zimbabwe's 181st match.
  • It was the 19th match between these two sides. The record now reads: Australia 18, Zimbabwe one.
  • Umpires Steve Davis and Daryl Harper were officiating in their 24th and 42nd match respectively.
  • Australia's total (302-5) was its third highest total against Zimbabwe in all matches after the 303-4 at Lord's on 09-06-1999 and 303-6 at Bulawayo on 21-10-1999. It was also the highest at this venue obliterating Australia's 274 for 7 against Sri Lanka on 31-01-1999.
  • It was also the 17th time Australia was compiling a total of 300 or more. At the other end of the scale it was the ninth such instance against Zimbabwe.
  • Ricky Ponting completed his 4000 runs in ODIs in his 112th match and innings. He became eighth Australian and 43rd batsman overall to do so.
  • Damien Martyn (144*) scored his second hundred in ODIs in his 69th match. His other hundred was 116* against New Zealand at Auckland on 03-03-2000. His innings is the third highest for Australia in all ODIs after Adam Gilchrist's 154 off 129 balls v Sri Lanka at Melbourne on 07-02-1999, Dean Jones' 145 off 136 balls v England at Brisbane on 16-12-1990 and Ricky Ponting's 145 off 158 balls v Zimbabwe at Delhi on 11-04-1998.
  • Ian Harvey scored 24 runs off Viljoen one over (46th of the innings). The sequence: 6 6 6 2 4 W (out). He became only the second Australian batsman to score 24 runs in a over after Rodney Marsh who scored 26 runs off Lance Cairns at Adelaide on 23-11-1980.
  • Heath Streak completed his 150 wickets in ODIs with the wicket of Brett Lee. He was playing his 122nd match. Streak became first Zimbabwean and 27th bowler overall to do so.
  • Zimbabwe's total (301-6) was its highest against Australia in all matches bettering 279 for six at Hobart on 30-01-2001. The total was also the best for Zimbabwe against all countries batting second obliterating 278 for 9 at Delhi on 11-04-1998 also against Australia. It was also the highest against Australia in Australia beating 284-3 by West Indies at Brisbane on 05-01-1997.
  • Zimbabwe's total was also the joint highest by any side batting second against Australia alongwith New Zealand's 301 for 9 at Christchurch on 26-02-2000.
  • Zimbabwe's defeat provided the 14th instance in ODIs of a side losing a match despite making 300 runs in a match. The highest losing score is 329 by Sri Lanka against West Indies at Sharjah on 16-10-1995 in a Champions Trophy match.
  • The match aggregate of 603 for the loss of 11 wickets is the second highest in a match involving Zimbabwe. The highest still remains 625 for the loss of 11 wickets in the match between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe at New Plymouth on 23-02-1992.
  • Stuart Carlisle (119) scored his second hundred in 66th match. His only other hundred was 121* against Sri Lanka at Harare in 18-12-1999.
  • The fourth wicket partnership of 187 runs between Stuart Carlisle and Grant Flower surpassed the following milestones:
  • * On reaching 54 they surpassed Zimbabwe's best for the fourth wicket against Australia (previous best: 53 between Grant Flower and Trevor Madondo at Harare on 23-10-1999),
    * At 111 they surpassed Zimbabwe's best for fourth wicket in WSC matches (previous best: 110 between Grant Flower and Dave Houghton v England at Sydney on 15-12-1994),
    * On 159 they surpassed Zimbabwe's best for fourth wicket against all countries (previous best: 158 between Flower brothers v India at Jodhpur on 08-12-2000),
    * At 169 they surpassed best partnership for fourth wicket against Australia by any country (previous best: 168 between Lee Germon and Chris Harris for New Zealand at Chennai on 11-03-1996.
    * Having added 187 they surpassed Zimbabwe's best for any wicket in all matches (previous best : 186* for fifth wicket between Grant Flower and Murray Goodwin v West Indies at Chester-le-Street on 16-07-2000.
  • When he caught Stuart Carlisle, Mark Waugh completed his 100 catches for Australia. He became sixth fieldsman (excluding 'keepers) and third Australian after Allan Border (127 catches in 273 matches) and Steve Waugh (103 catches in 304 matches) to do so.
  • This catch was also the 50th for Mark Waugh in day-night matches. He became second fielder after countryman Allan Border who has a tally of 54 catches from 101 matches.
  • Australia was winning a match by narrowest possible margin for the fourth time in its ODI history. It had beaten India at Chennai and at Brisbane on 09-10-1987 and 01-03-1992 respectively and South Africa at Bloemfontein on 08-04-1994.
  • The defeat by one run was the narrowest for Zimbabwe. It had lost to New Zealand by two runs at Auckland on 08-03-1998.
  • Damien Martyn was winning Man of the Match award was the third time in his career.
