  • It was the 1581st ODI match in cricket history.
  • It was South Africa's 192nd match. The record now reads: won 120, lost 66,tied 1 and abandoned 5.
  • It was India's 442nd match.The record now reads: won 198,lost 223, tied 3 and abandoned 18.
  • It was the 37th meeting between the two sides. The record now reads: South Africa 24,India 12, abandoned 1.
  • Anil Kumble was making his 200th appearance in ODIs.He became fourth Indian after Mohammad Azharuddin (331), Sachin Tendulkar (246) and Kapil Dev (225) and 20th player overall to do so.
  • Mohammad Azharuddin was run-out for 31st time in his career. He has now equalled Pakistan's Inzamam-ul-Haq's tally of such dismissals. Now only Pakistan's Wasim Akram has been dismissed in this fashion on more occasions than these two - 33.
  • It was Azharuddin's seventh such dismissal against South Africa. He thus joined Pakistan's Inzamam-ul-Haq to get out in this mode on most occasions against South Africa.
  • The run-out of Sachin Tendulkar was 20th such dismissal for him in ODIs. Now only Mohammad Azharuddin (31) has been dismissed in this fashion on more occasions for India than Tendulkar. Manoj Prabhakar and Ajay Jadeja have been run-out 18 times each.
  • Lance Klusener was dismissed without scoring for the seventh time in his career-third time against India. His other ducks against India came at Nairobi (Gymkhana) on 03-10-1999 (off the first ball)and at Kochi on 09-03-2000 (off the fourth ball). He now holds the dubious distinction of scoring most ducks for South Africa against India alongwith former opener Andrew Hudson. Incidentally SriLanka's Romesh Kaluwitharana and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi share the record of aggregating most ducks in a career against India. They were out on duck four times apiece.
  • Nantie Hayward (4-31) took four wickets for the first time in his career.His previous best was 2 for 39 against England at CapeTown on 26-01-2000 in his debut match.
  • South Africa extended its unbeaten run at Sharjah to eight matches. The record of most consecutive wins at Sharjah is, however,held by Pakistan. Pakistan won 10 matches at a trot from 23-03-1989 to 04-05-1990.
  • Nantie Hayward won his maiden Man of the Match award in his eighth match.
  • Sourav Ganguly has now captained India in 13 matches,won 6 and lost 7.
