A rare hundred, a rarer five-for

3 Test hundreds by New Zealand captains against South Africa before Kane Williamson. The previous one was Stephen Fleming's 262 in Cape Town in 2006. Williamson's is the first hundred by any opposition captain against South Africa in 25 Tests since Michael Clarke scored 161 not out in Cape Town in 2013-14.

16 Test hundreds by Williamson - now the joint second-highest by a New Zealand batsman. Ross Taylor too has 16 Test hundreds. Martin Crowe leads this list with 17 hundreds. Williamson has taken only 107 innings to Crowe's 118 and Taylor's 142 innings.

1964 Last time before a South Africa spinner took a five-wicket haul in Tests against New Zealand, before Keshav Maharaj's 5 for 94 on the third day. David Pithey had taken 6 for 58 at Carisbrook, Dunedin in 1964. Overall, this is only the seventh five-for by a South Africa spinner in Tests against New Zealand.

The extra bounce and movement that the new ball offered off the same line and length helped Kagiso Rabada eventually get Williamson caught behind. Williamson capitalised on deliveries that the South Africa pacers dropped a bit short in trying to hit that length. The batsman made 32 runs off 47 deliveries that were dropped short of good length outside the off stump.

2012 The last time New Zealand took the first-innings lead in Tests against South Africa, before Friday. That instance too had come at the same venue, when the hosts had taken a 35-run lead in the first innings. This is only the seventh time in 26 Tests since South Africa's readmission that New Zealand have taken the first-innings lead against them.
