ACB announces media award winners for Women's Ashes Series

The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) today announced the winners of the Commonwealth Bank media awards for coverage of the 2003 Women's Ashes Series.

The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) today announced the winners of the Commonwealth Bank media awards for coverage of the 2003 Women's Ashes Series.
The award winners in the following categories are:
  1. Best overall coverage
    Joint winners - ABC News and Current Affairs Brisbane and The Australian newspaper.
  • Best photo
    Patrick Hamilton, The Australian, for his image of Australian Test captain Belinda Clark which appeared on Tuesday 18 February.
  • Best electronic story Peter Walsh, ABC Radio South Australia, for his interviews titled English Assault and Aussie Girls.
  • Best print story
    Brian Burke, The Australian, for his article titled Australian keeper working fingers to the bone, which appeared on Saturday 15 February 2003.
  • ACB General Manager, Public Affairs, Peter Young, said media interest in the Women's Ashes Series received nationwide coverage.
    "It was a busy news period for cricket over the past two weeks, but the level of media interest in the series shows that the profile of the team and the game is rising," said Mr Young.
    "Coverage of the Women's Ashes Series extended across Australia and to the United Kingdom and featured in print, radio, electronic, on-line and other news mediums.
    "We congratulate the award winners and thank all media for their support and continued promotion of women's cricket."
    Each award winner receives a $500 Streamline Express account from the Commonwealth Bank, sponsor of the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars. The joint winners of the best coverage category will split the award, each receiving a $250 Streamline Express account from the Commonwealth Bank.
    The awards were based on journalistic/television/photographic coverage and reporting of the two-Test Women's Ashes Series in Brisbane (15-17 February) and Sydney (22-25 February).
