At Kuala Lumpur, September 16, 2006 (day/night). No result. Australia 2 pts, India 2 pts. Toss:
Australia.
Rain intervened twice in this match, first to help Australia's useful total assume more difficult
proportions, then to bail India out after Johnson, in a thrilling burst, had blown away four batsmen
in eight balls. A two-hour shower had reduced India's target to 170 in 29 overs, but when play
resumed, Dravid shovelled Johnson to cover, and next ball Pathan was defeated by pace and late
away-swing. Tendulkar deflected the hat-trick ball, but he and Yuvraj were both out to deliveries
that bounced and left them. Then it rained again, ensuring that Johnson's spell would remain the
memory of the night. Watson had been promoted to open for Australia, giving him the opportunity
to display a technique better suited to the new ball than the old one. Clarke also played well, but
Harbhajan bamboozled the middle order. McGrath and Tendulkar (hit on the helmet first ball)
made only a passing reacquaintance before the first interruption.
