At Boland Park in Paarl, the Eagles ensured that they ended on the top of
the Standard Bank Cup table with a convincing 7-wicket win over wooden
spoonists Western Province Boland.
With only pride left to play for, Western Province Boland were asked to
bat first on a pitch that showed tinges of green. Using the conditions
to their advantage, the Eagles captured three early cheap wickets with
only Derrin Bassage, playing his first game of the season, scoring a
patient 74. A 84-run partnership between Bassage and Ashwell Prince (33)
restored some respectability to the total, but with overs running out
Western Province Boland could only muster 168 for 9. Cliff Deacon, the pick of the Eagles bowlers with a nine over spell of 2-16, was named Man of the Match.
With the breeze and warm weather helping to make the pitch play a bit
easier, the Eagles paced their innings well and had little difficulty in
reaching the target of 169 in 43.1 overs. Morne van Wyk (26) and
Jonathan Beukus (78) again laid the foundation with a 63-run opening
partnership. A further 36 from Benjamin Hector had them well in sight of
victory, leaving it to Davy Jacobs and Johannes van der Wath to see them
through.
