England v Sri Lanka
15-Apr-2004
At Adelaide, January 17, 2003 (day/night). England won by 19 runs. England 5 pts, Sri Lanka 1 pt. Toss: England.
When Jayasuriya set off for his 100th run, Sri Lanka needed 122 at less than a run a ball, with
six wickets left. However, a mid-pitch collision with Sangakkara changed the course of the match
and left England virtually assured of a place in the finals. Jayasuriya's run-out for an 83-ball 99
- one short of his third century in four games - shook Sri Lanka from their stride and Caddick,
enjoying a resurgence since the Sydney Test, did the rest. On a warm evening which drew the
best out of England's bowlers, his awkward length distressed the Sri Lankans and he ended with
four for 35. The roots of the win were Knight's carefully paced innings and a jaunty reminder of
Stewart's gift for timing the ball. His fifty injected a zeal the middle order had recently lacked,
and lifted England to a total that disguised the difficulties of a two-paced pitch.
Man of the Match: A. R. Caddick.
