Gloucestershire have a good chance of winning their match against Northamptonshire at Gloucester, although they will need to take all ten wickets on the final day.
Northants did well to stave off the threat of the follow-on, though, Lance Klusener taking them past that point thanks to a defiant ninth-wicket stand of 61 with Johan van der Wath (25). Klusener fell just short of his hundred, trapped by Vikram Banerjee, who claimed 4 for 38.
Alex Gidman then smashed 105 not out from 125 balls, after coming in with his side at 44 for 3. He and Chris Taylor (46) boosted the total towards the eventual declaration at 244 for 8.
But their 13 overs before the close failed to produce a wicket, Stephen Peters and Davey Jacobs taking Northants to 49 without loss.
