5 Number of times India have been bowled out on the first day in home Tests since 2000, including this innings. South Africa have been the opposition on four out of the five occasions. The previous instance was in the Ahmedabad Test in 2008, when India were skittled out for 76 runs.
13.71 Runs South Africa's spinners averaged per wicket in India's innings. They took seven wickets from 32 overs and conceded just 96 runs. There are only six other instances when overseas spinners have averaged better while taking seven or more wickets in the first innings of Tests in India. Australia's spinners had taken 8 for 106 at 13.25 in the Delhi Test in 2012-13, the previous instance when visiting spinners did better than South Africa's spinners in this innings.
6 Wickets Dean Elgar had taken from 69.1 overs in Tests before this match. He took four from the eight overs he bowled in India's innings, including the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Wriddhiman Saha in the first 19 balls he bowled. This is the first time he has taken more than one wicket in an innings in Tests.
4/25 Elgar's previous best in first-class cricket, which came in the match between Titans and Knights in 2011-12 in Centurion. His 4 for 22 in this match is only the second time he has taken a four-wicket haul in his first-class career. Elgar had taken 40 first-class wickets at an average of 51.15 before this Test. His four wickets in India's innings came at an average of 5.5.
4 Number of fifty-plus scores by M Vijay in his last five Test innings, including his 75 in this match. He had made scores of 80, 150, 0, and 82 before this. This was only his second fifty against South Africa in ten Test innings. Vijay has made 294 runs against them at an average of 29.40.
2000 The previous instance of a South Africa spinner returning better figures in an innings in Tests in India than Elgar's 4 for 22. Nicky Boje took 5 for 83 in the second innings of the Bangalore Test in 2000. Apart from Boje's returns, Paul Adams' 6 for 55 in Kanpur in 1996 is the only other time a South Africa spinner has done better in Tests in India than Elgar.
1 Previous instance of an overseas spinner returning better figures in Tests in Mohali than Elgar's 4 for 22. Danish Kaneria took 6 for 150 in India's first innings in 2005-06. This is only the third time a spinner has taken four or more wickets in an innings in Tests in Mohali.
241 Cheteshwar Pujara's average against left-arm spinners before his dismissal to Dean Elgar in this Test. He had faced 620 deliveries from left-arm spinners and only Monty Panesar had managed to dismiss him once. Elgar took only four balls to dismiss him in this innings.
92 Deliveries faced by Ravindra Jadeja in his innings of 38 - this was his second-longest innings in Tests. He had faced 98 deliveries at Trent Bridge last year. This was also only the second time he has faced 60 or more deliveries in a Test innings.
1999 The last and only time in Mohali when more than 12 wickets fell on the first day of a Test. On that occasion, India were bowled out for 83 and New Zealand were 119 for 3 at stumps. The 12 wickets that fell on the first day of this Test are the fourth-highest for any day of a match in Mohali. As many as 14 wickets fell on the fourth day of the 2010 Test, the most to fall in a single day of a Test at this venue.
15 Instances of Vijay being dismissed lbw in 55 innings as a Test opener. His dismissal to Simon Harmer in this innings was his fourth such dismissal in a row. Among openers with at least 50 dismissals in Tests, his percentage of lbw dismissals of 27.27% is the third highest behind Daren Ganga (22 out of 64, 34.48%) and Shane Watson (16 out of 50, 32.00%).
