Chasing a target adjusted by Duckworth/Lewis to 198, England left themselves with too much ground to recover after failing to make headway during the first two powerplays. Given an uncertain forecast, Pietersen should have derived a huge advantage from winning the toss.

But rain first reduced the contest to 44 overs per side, leaving India 17 powerplay overs - which they had just completed when a longer interruption cut the game to 22 overs a side, which meant England had only eight overs in which to exploit the fielding restrictions. They were 21 for one after six overs and scored from only 11 of those 36 balls, raising further questions about the composition and approach of the top three. Shah speeded up to reach 72 from 48 balls, and Flintoff swung out, with one huge six off Harbhajan Singh over midwicket hitting the roof of the stand. But the 17th over, by Zaheer Khan, proved decisive: he forced a miscue from Shah and conceded only four runs.

As at Kanpur, India gave themselves the best chance on D/L by keeping wickets in hand - not that Sehwag held back in bludgeoning 69 from 57 balls. Victory handed them an unassailable 4-0 lead.
