India v England in India, 2011-12

Wisden's review of the first ODI, India v England in India, 2011-12

15-Apr-2012
At Hyderabad (Uppal), October 14, 2011 (day/night). India won by 126 runs. Toss: India.
England's early control was overturned by the calm and masterful Dhoni, who - after rebuilding the innings with the help of the fluent Raina - adjusted the throttle to his will in a 70-ball stay that doubled India's score in the final 15 overs. On a slow surface, the target was always likely to be beyond England, although at 111 for two in the 23rd over, with Cook offering brisk defiance, they were in the hunt. But the spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja provoked collapse and panic in the middle order: six wickets tumbled in nine overs, and England were dismissed with nearly 14 unused. The first 17 balls of the match went unwitnessed by anyone outside the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium as the host broadcasters, Nimbus, awaited their uplink licence from the Indian government's Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in Delhi. Sky Sports, who had sent a four-strong commentary team to cover the series, were less lucky and, halfway through the game, gave up hope of providing their own take on the match for viewers back in the UK. Instead, David Lloyd and Nick Knight started by commentating over their mobile phones from the ground, before Sky turned to the local feed.
Man of the Match: MS Dhoni
