India v New Zealand

At Centurion, March 14, 2003

15-Apr-2004
At Centurion, March 14, 2003. India won by seven wickets. Toss: India.
India - already in the semis - displayed their growing confidence, won their seventh game in succession and achieved sweet revenge for their recent defeat in New Zealand. As Kaif hit Styris for two consecutive fours to polish off the match, New Zealand had to sleep on their fate - hoping Zimbabwe could conjure an unlikely victory over Sri Lanka. They were in trouble immediately after the national anthems: Zaheer Khan launched into his run-up, and his second and third balls took out McMillan and Astle while Fleming stood dazed at the non-striker's end like a jilted lover. After that, Ganguly's bowling changes were touched by stardust, and only the tail made the total respectable. So it was down to Bond. When Sehwag edged his sixth ball to second slip, Ganguly was yorked and Tendulkar holed out to Tuffey after flaying him for three consecutive fours, New Zealand were quivering with hope. But once Dravid was dropped on one - a simple chance to the keeper - the heads went down and so did the match. He and Kaif steered India to easy victory with nine overs to go.
Man of the Match: Zaheer Khan. Attendance: 16,124.
