Deccan Chargers prevailed over Royal Challengers Bangalore in a thrilling final by six runs  •  Associated Press

At Johannesburg, May 24, 2009 (floodlit). Deccan Chargers won by six runs. Toss: Royal Challengers Bangalore. Deccan Chargers 143-6 (20 overs) (H. H. Gibbs 53*, A. Symonds 33; A. Kumble 4-16); Royal Challengers Bangalore 137-9 (20 overs) (R. E. van der Merwe 32; P.P. Ojha 3-28).
Kumble's decision to open the bowling was fully justified as he dismissed the dangerous Gilchrist third ball, but Gibbs took up the cudgels, helped by Symonds, who spanked 33 from 21 balls as his side posted a reasonable total. Bangalore also struggled at first, but fancied their chances at 99 for four after 14 overs… then lost Ross Taylor and Virat Kohli to successive balls from Symonds, who had a say in everything - batting, fielding, sledging, decision-making. The last over started with Bangalore needing 15, their last pair at the crease, and R. P. Singh ensured a fairytale victory for the Deccan Chargers, who came from last in the inaugural edition of the IPL to first in this.
Man of the Match: A. Kumble. Man of the Series: A. C. Gilchrist.
