Vijay frustrates England with unbeaten 70

India's opener, Murali Vijay, anchored his side's reply to England's first-innings total of 400, by adding a 169-ball 70 on the second day of the fourth Test in Mumbai on Friday.

India's opener, Murali Vijay, anchored his side's reply to England's first-innings total of 400, by adding a 169-ball 70 that guided his side to 146 for 1 at stumps on the second day of the fourth Test in Mumbai on Friday.
England looked comfortably poised at the start of the day at 288 for 5, with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler at the crease. Virat Kohli opted for spin, first up and the ploy worked as R Ashwin, in the third over of the day, dismissed Stokes for 31, to claim his 23rd five-for in Tests, making him the joint third-highest for India with Kapil Dev. Only Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh have more. Ashwin has claimed 47 wickets in 2016, the most by a spinner in India in a calendar year, going past Erapalli Prasanna's record that had stood since 1969.
England managed 385 for 8 in the first session, with Ravindra Jadeja joining Ashwin in the wickets. The disciplined bowling effort restricted the tourists to a respectable first-innings total.
India stuttered at the start and lost opener, KL Rahul for 24 in the 14th over. The set back didn't affect Vijay's tempo as he clobbered Adil Rashid for a four and a six in the third over after England had made the breakthrough.
Vijay rarely lost concentration during his innings. He drove the ball elegantly and attacked England's bowlers when the pressure built up. England did have a chance to dismiss the opener, in the 32nd over, but wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow failed to stump him.
Vijay motored along on a Wankhede surface that aided batsmen. The Vijay-Pujara combine added 107 runs for the second wicket at stumps. Vijay had hit six fours and two sixes in his unbeaten knock. Pujara joins him with an unbeaten 47. The hosts are still 254 runs shy of England's first-innings effort.
