PAKISTAN v WEST INDIES 1980-81

At Multan, December 30, 31, January 2, 3, 4. Drawn. The start of the fourth and final Test, played on a new Test ground, was delayed by the late arrival of an umpire. The match was marred on the second day by Clarke's disgraceful action in throwing a brick into the crowd. The spectators erupted and play was held up for twenty-five minutes until Kallicharran appealed to the crowd on bended knee to restore order.

The toss was won by Lloyd, who was captaining his country in Tests for the 42nd time, passing Peter May's record of 41. West Indies made an uncertain start on a worn pitch but, with useful support from Gomes and Clarke, Richards again carried the innings. Batting for six hours, he hit fifteen boundaries in his first century against Pakistan and the only West Indian century of the tour. From 198 for seven at the close on the first day, West Indies took their total to 249 on the second, thanks to defiant tenth-wicket stand of 41 from Richards and Croft.

Pakistan lost both openers for 4, but Majid Khan and Javed Miandad added 100 before the close. On the third day, Wasim Raja became the tenth Pakistani player to pass 2,000 runs in Tests before Garner ended the Pakistan innings, giving his side a lead of 83 and becoming the eighth West Indian bowler to take 100 Test wickets. Richards fell, at 84, to the last ball before tea, and when play resumed ten minutes before the close - after an interruption for bad light and drizzle - Bacchus, Croft and Murray fell in quick succession, leaving West Indies vulnerable at 85 for five. Rain permitted only forty minutes of play on the fourth day and completely washed out the fifth; thus, for the first time in Pakistan, West Indies won a series - 1-0.
