Rohit Sharma produced a match-winning hundred to help India beat Bangladesh by 109 runs in their World Cup 2015 Quarter-finals played at the MCG on Thursday.
Sharma came into the knock-out match with scores of 16, 64, 7, 57 and 15 in the group stages of the competition and he faced a confident Bangladesh unit, fresh off their win over England.
Sharma and his opening-partner Shikhar Dhawan got India off to a solid 75-run start in 17 overs, before Dhawan departed.
Sharma stood tall despite India loosing Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession. He and Suresh Raina added 122 runs for the fourth wicket. Raina was the more aggressive of the two, but Sharma was quick to score off the odd-loose ball when it presented itself.
He took 108 balls to score his first ton of the World Cup and his effort helped India post 302 in their innings. Bangladesh struggled to maintain the tempo required through their innings. They managed just 193 in reply.
"I think it will be right up there, it was an important situation where the team needed it the most. I was determined, I wanted to bat as long as possible and put the team into a good situation and the bowlers did a fantastic job," Sharma said. "Batting at the top of the order, its important to get big hundreds and I wand to make the most of it when I go out to bat and I'm happy with the way it turned out. We played as a team. Bowlers are taking wicket,s batsmen are scoring runs, we just need to take this momentum into the semis."
