This week in our stats series Did You Know where we present well known and lesser-known facts on a theme, we look at records and trivia from the IPL.
3 Number of times Rohit Sharma has faced the last ball of the 20th over while chasing. He has hit that delivery for six on all three occasions and ended up winning all those matches. No other batsman has done it more than once. MS Dhoni has also hit last-ball sixes thrice, but two of those were in unsuccessful chases when the team needed 31 runs and 11 runs off the last ball respectively. In addition, Rohit has remained not out in an IPL chase 18 times and his team has won the match each time.
20.66 Chris Gayle's average when chasing 200-plus targets in the IPL. His side has been set a target of 200-plus nine times and lost each time. His scores while chasing such targets: 0, 0, 10, 76, 32, 21, 20, 23, 4.
0 Number of boundaries hit by MS Dhoni against Sunil Narine in the IPL. Dhoni has faced 59 balls from Narine and scored 29 without hitting a four or a six. No other batsman has faced 50-plus balls against a bowler without hitting a boundary.
120 Sixes hit by Andre Russell in the IPL. In comparison, he has hit only 96 fours. Among 79 batsmen who have hit 30 or more sixes, Russell is the only one to have more sixes than fours.
1927 Runs scored by Ravindra Jadeja in 128 innings in the IPL, with a high score of 48. He is the only player with over 1000 runs in the tournament's history without ever passing 50. Stuart Binny, with 880 runs and a high score of 48 not out, comes next. Jadeja's 128 innings are also the most played without making a 50-plus score.
1 Number of centuries by Kolkata Knight Riders batsmen in the IPL. KKR's one and only century was scored in the first-ever IPL match, on April 18, 2008 - Brendon McCullum's 158 not out against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Bangalore. KKR have played 193 IPL matches since then and the highest score in these matches has been Dinesh Karthik's 97 not out in 2019. McCullum scored 71.17% of team's total of 222 in that first match, which is also an IPL record.
14 Maiden overs bowled by Praveen Kumar in the IPL, the most by a bowler. Irfan Pathan comes next, with ten maidens. Mohit Sharma has bowled the most overs without a maiden in his IPL career - 288.2.
9 Number of times Jaydev Unadkat has been bought at IPL auctions - the most for any player. He was picked up by KKR in 2011, by RCB in 2013, by Delhi Daredevils in 2014 and 2015, by KKR in 2016, Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017 and Rajasthan Royals in 2018, 2019 and 2020. Dinesh Karthik, Yuvraj Singh, Amit Mishra, and Aaron Finch have been bought six times each, the second-highest after Unadkat.
67 Balls taken by Manish Pandey to score his maiden IPL century in 2009, which is the slowest century in IPL history. His unbeaten 114 in Centurion was the first IPL hundred by an Indian batsman and the only century by a teenager in the tournament's history.
120* The highest individual score in a chase, by Paul Valthaty, for Kings XI Punjab against Chennai Super Kings in Mohali in 2011.
