Shafiq-ul-Haq, the former Bangladesh captain, has been appointed the national team's operations manager. Appointed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on a one-year contract, Shafiq will begin his tenure from the five-ODI series in Pakistan starting April 8.
A wicketkeeper, Shafiq started his cricketing career in 1965 and played 29 first-class games for East Pakistan. He represented Bangladesh from 1976 to 1984 and captained the country in the 1979 and 1982 ICC Trophy in England.
He served as the Bangladesh team manager during the 1988 Asia Cup in Dhaka, the 1990 Australasia Cup in Sharjah, the home series against Pakistan in 2002 and Australia in 2006 and on the tour of Zimbabwe and Kenya the same year. His stint with the Bangladesh board included a post as the deputy director development and venue director of the Sher-e-Bangla stadium in Mirpur.
Shafiq was a also a national selector during Bangladesh's ICC Trophy victory in 1997. He was one of the representatives of the BCB at the Host Submission meetings of the 2011 World Cup to be jointly hosted by the four Test-playing countries in the subcontinent.
