Tillakaratne Dilshan powers Sri Lanka past Bangladesh

Tillakaratne Dilshan combined forces with Kumar Sangakkara to help Sri Lanka thrash Bangladesh by 92 runs in their World Cup 2015 Group A encounter at the MCG on Thursday.

Sri Lanka's captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and chose to bat first. His openers, Dilshan and Lahiru Thirimanne got their side off to a solid start and added 122 runs for the first wicket.

Bangladesh compounded their own woes and dropped Thirimanne in the first over of the match itself. They finally dismissed him in the 25th over for 52.

Bangladesh' bowlers looked to add to their wicket-tally but Thirimanne' was the only wicket they claimed in the match, as Dilshan and Sangakkara took their bowlers apart.

Dilshan's 50 came off just 59 balls and included eight fours, while Sangakkara scored his from just 45 balls and hit the same number of boundaries as his partner.

Dilshan was the first to reach his century, in the 41st over before reaching 161 off 146 balls with 22 fours, his highest ODI score. It was his 21st century overall and his fourth against Bangladesh. This was also the first ODI century by a Sri Lankan at the MCG.

Sangakkara reached three figures, his 22nd in ODI's, in the last over of the innings from just 74 balls. The 210-run stand for the second wicket helped Sri Lanka score a mammoth 332.

Bangladesh, already jolted from the power hitting from Sri Lanka, were off to a poor start and lost Tamim Iqbal in the first over itself. A majority of their batsmen thereafter got starts but failed to convert it into anything substantial.

Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib ul Hasan's 64-run stand for the sixth wicket was the best they could conjure. Their dismissal, nine-overs apart, signalled an end to Bangladesh' resistance. They managed just 240 in reply.

"Really happy today because in last game I got out on first ball. I'm enjoying every single moment in the middle and try to enjoy every ball there with the youngsters. Sanga is a great man, no doubt. With him I've had more than 14-15 hundred partnerships. With him I discussed how to build the partnership and the Powerplay. I also dropped one catch and it's part of the game, but I'm very happy how we came back and Malinga bowled well. We bowled and fielded well," Dilshan said.
