West Indies v Sri Lanka

Wisden's review of the fifth match, West Indies v Sri Lanka

15-Apr-2014
At Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, July 7-8, 2013. Sri Lanka won by 39 runs (D/L). Toss: West Indies. Sri Lanka 4pts.
Sangakkara required all his experience to cope with some testing seam bowling from Roach and Holder after Sri Lanka were sent in on a damp, treacherous pitch. He battled through 33 balls for 11 before rain ended play on the first day, with Sri Lanka 60 for three after 19 overs. When play resumed on the reserve day, Sangakkara mounted a masterclass as conditions improved, reaching 50 off 76 deliveries, but adding 40 off his next 19. The last ten of the adjusted 41 overs yielded 105. Mathews maintained the momentum as the West Indian bowlers became increasingly indisciplined, spraying 24 wides in all directions. At 31 for four in the ninth over, West Indies' cause appeared hopeless until Simmons (recalled in place of Dwayne Bravo, suspended for his team's dilatory over-rate in the previous match) and Darren Bravo put on 123 in 24 overs. As rain threatened with the total still short of the Duckworth/Lewis par, Simmons was out aiming for his fifth six. Pollard and Sammy, the likeliest hitters, went cheaply, Bravo followed for 70 from 84 balls, and it was left to Roach and Best to deny Sri Lanka the bonus point that would have guaranteed them a place in the final.
Man of the Match: K. C. Sangakkara.
