At Port of Spain, January 19, 20, 22, 23, 24. Drawn. Boycott, driving powerfully, hit Hall for four 4's in his first two overs to give England the initiative which they held throughout. West Indies struggled to safety finally when Hall partnered Sobers throughout the final session which began when defeat by an innings was probable.

Inspired by Boycott, whom Edrich quietly supported in an opening stand of 80 off 29 overs, England batted until the third morning. Boycott hit ten 4's and, with Cowdrey and Barrington adding 134 off 50 overs, England were 244 for two after the first day.

Barrington and Graveney shared another big stand, and Graveney's 118 with twenty 4's in 75 overs was a glorious exhibition of cultured batting. Barrington, ruthlessly efficient, batted six and a half hours and hit fourteen 4's and two 6's, with one of which he completed his century.

Against England's massive total West Indies failed to avoid a follow-on, despite a resolute innings lasting four hours and ten minutes by Kanhai and an exciting knock by Lloyd. On occasions he hit with great power, which gave him one 6 and seventeen 4's, and like Graveney, batted 75 overs for 118.

Jones condemned West Indies to follow-on by taking the last three wickets in four hours shortly before tea on fourth day. Rain then cut an hour and forty minutes from the play. On the final day Nurse, Camacho, Kanhai and Butcher steered their side to 164 for two in mid-afternoon.

Hobbs then started a remarkable collapse by dismissing Kanhai. In the final over before tea Brown, bowling with great fire, shot out Butcher, Murray and Griffith. Eight wickets were down, and six had gone in an hour while the total moved from 164 to 180.

Immediately after the interval Hall gave a chance off Brown to Boycott fielding unfamiliarly at short square leg. After that Hall was proof against pace and spin alike. He and Sobers spent nearly an hour scoring the 25 to avoid an innings defeat. Finally, with the match safe, they hit out merrily against the slow bowling of Barrington and Hobbs.
