West Indies v India

Toss: West Indies

15-Apr-1963
Toss: West Indies. Test debuts: West Indies - D.W.Allan.
West Indies won by an innings and 30 runs, a victory that assured them the rubber.
The final phase was a triumph for their off-spinner, Gibbs. In the last session between lunch and tea he took his eight wickets for six runs in 15.3 overs, 14 of them maidens.
With Sardesai and Manjrekar approaching a three-figure partnership for the third wicket, there was no suggestion at lunch time that the end was so near, but again India's batting proved brittle.
The West Indies batsmen, facing easier bowling, always looked more confident if they were not always attractive. Kanhai started well with a fine innings. He reached 50 in seventy-seven minutes and his 89 in two hours contained three 6's and thirteen 4's.
Unaccountably, West Indies lapsed into negative play on the third day, during which they added only 164 runs for the loss of four wickets, despite the fact that they were already ahead. The pre-lunch period brought 58 runs off 45 overs, 62 were added off 42 overs in the afternoon and the last session produced 44 runs. Worrell at one stage occupied an hour and a half over eight.
The Nawab of Pataudi led India in place of the injured Contractor and at 21 years, two months, eighteen days he become the youngest Test captain.
