WEST INDIES v PAKISTAN 1957-58

At Port of Spain, March 26, 27, 28, 29, 31. Pakistan won by an innings and one run. Excellent pace bowling by Fazal Mahmood and Khan Mohammad enabled Pakistan to dismiss West Indies for a modest score, although Weekes and Smith resisted strongly. Saeed Ahmed and Wazir Mohammad mastered the West Indies attack, which suffered an early blow when Gilchrist sprained an ankle. Wazir, batting six hours and three-quarters and hitting twenty-two 4's, shared stands of 169 with Saeed and 154 with his brother, Hanif. Making his first Test appearance, the West Indies fast bowler, Taylor, showing pace and persistency, performed admirably in taking five wickets in 37 overs. Pakistan, with a lead of 228, bowled and fielded with more determination than in the previous Tests. Nasimul Ghani was particularly impressive with his left-arm slows on a pitch now responsive to spin, and he received good support from Haseeb Ahsan. His six wickets included those of such formidable batsmen as Hunte, Sobers, Walcott and Smith, a feat indeed for a player aged sixteen. In the end, Pakistan were not required to bat again. They won before lunch with more than a day to spare.
