West Indies v Zimbabwe 2000-2001

Toss: West Indies

15-Apr-2002
Toss: West Indies.
Zimbabwe secured their first win after an extraordinary collapse by West Indies. Needing only 139, they were 31 for eight by the 17th over, 12 short of the lowest total in one-day internationals (they themselves dismissed Pakistan for 43 at Cape Town in 1992-93). But McLean struck 40 from 32 balls and, with Adams's help, steered West Indies past their own worst score, 87 against Australia on this same ground, also in 1992-93. He remained unbeaten when the innings ended at 91 in the 32nd over. Zimbabwean captain Streak, backed to the hilt by his fellow-seamers, had triggered the slide with four wickets, and he conceded only eight runs in eight overs. Zimbabwe's batsmen, too, had been mown down, by Cuffy in particular, and were 66 for six when Streak came to the crease. He saw another 72 added - helped by five penalty runs, the first awarded in a one-day international, when Jacobs, attempting a world record-equalling sixth catch, lost his hat and it fell on the ball.

Man of the Match: H. H. Streak.
