635 Runs scored by Andy Flower when following on in Tests, the most by a batsman. He played seven innings when his team was asked to follow on, and scored 635 runs at an average of 158.75 with two hundreds and three fifties. His average is also the highest among all batsmen who batted three or more times in follow-ons. The two top scores of his career came when following on - 232 not out against India in Nagpur, and an unbeaten 199 against South Africa in Harare. Those two innings came in a span of ten months between November 2000 and September 2001.
337 Hanif Mohammad's innings against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1958, which is the highest score and the only triple-century in a follow-on in Test history. There have been six double-centuries, which include two 250-plus scores: VVS Laxman's 281 against Australia at Eden Gardens in 2001 and Gary Kirsten's 275 versus England in Durban in 1999. All seven (200-plus) innings saved the Test for their sides. Flower's 199 not out is the highest score in a losing cause while following on.
3 The most hundreds scored by a batsman when following on in Tests, by Martin Crowe and Michael Vaughan. Vaughan batted five times in follow-ons and scored hundreds in three of them, of which two came in draws.
8 Number of 150-plus scores in follow-ons in a three-and-a-half-year period between July 1998 and January 2002. There were ten centuries in follow-ons in that span, and eight of those were converted into 150-plus scores. Out of the six double-centuries in follow-ons in Test history, three came in that period. There have been 12 scores of 175 or more while following on, of which six came in that 42-month period. Since Kirsten's 153 against Australia at the SCG in 2002, there have been 33 follow-on centuries, but only three of them have exceeded 150: Darren Bravo (218), Alastair Cook (176) and Dimuth Karunaratne (152).
3 Instances of teams winning a Test after being asked to follow on. Australia were on the losing side on all three occasions, twice against England - at the SCG in 1894 and Headingley in 1981 - and against India at Eden Gardens in 2001.
2011 The last time India were asked to follow on, by England at The Oval. Since then, India have played 87 Tests without a follow-on. There were three instances when opposition teams had the chance to enforce it but didn't. England were last asked to follow on in 2015, while all other teams have followed on at least once since the start of 2017.
13 Number of times John Reid and Shivnarine Chanderpaul batted while following on, the most by a player. Bert Sutcliffe and Mohammad Ashraful played 11 follow-on innings.
45.56 Percentage of follow-ons enforced by teams in the last decade (2010 to 2019) when they had the opportunity to enforce (200-plus first-innings lead in five-day Tests). The rate of enforcing follow-ons has declined drastically in the last two decades. In the 1990s, teams had enforced the follow-on 89% of the times (32 out of 36) whereas in the 2000s, the rate dropped to 66.67% (56 times out of 84 opportunities). In the 1970s and 1980s, teams had asked oppositions to follow on 50 out of 54 opportunities.
