With less than a month to go for the 2020 IPL, we shift our focus to trivia related to the league in Did You Know. This week's piece is all about the death overs (17 to 20) of the tournament.
2206 Runs scored by MS Dhoni in the death overs in the IPL, the most by a batsman. His strike rate in the final four overs is 190.50. He has scored nearly 1000 runs more than the next batsman on this list, Kieron Pollard with 1276 runs at a strike rate of 178.71. Rohit Sharma (1136 at 199.64) and AB de Villiers (1063 at 234.65) are the others with 1000-plus runs in the death overs in IPL history.
236.17 Rishabh Pant's strike rate in the death overs - the best among the 89 batsmen who have faced 100-plus balls in the last four overs. Pant has scored 333 runs off 141 balls at the death. De Villiers is next with a strike rate of 234.65 followed by Andre Russell (218.54), Chris Gayle (215.78), Sanju Samson (206.04) and Virat Kohli (205.47).
90 Wickets by Lasith Malinga in the death overs in IPL, the most by a bowler. Dwayne Bravo (77) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (66) are the only others with 50-plus wickets at the death. Sunil Narine, with 48 wickets, is fourth on the list. No other spinner has picked more than 26 wickets (Piyush Chawla) in the death overs.
7.25 Rashid Khan's economy at the death, the best among 84 bowlers who have delivered 100-plus balls in this phase. Doug Bollinger (7.51), Malinga (7.82), Mitchell Starc (7.83) and Narine (7.88) complete the top five in this list.
136 Sixes hit by Dhoni in the last four overs, easily the most by a batsman. Pollard is next with 92 sixes. De Villiers (83), Rohit (78), Russell (62) and (59) are the others to have hit 50-plus sixes in death overs. Pant has the best balls per six ratio (4.86) among all those who faced 100-plus balls. Among bowlers, Bravo has conceded the most sixes (76) in the death overs, followed by Umesh Yadav (53), Vinay Kumar (48) and Bhuvneshwar (47). Hardik Pandya has the worst balls-per-six stat in the death overs - 5.78 (23 sixes in 133 balls).
59 The most runs scored by a batsman in the final four overs of an innings in IPL history. Pant had smashed 59 off 18 during his knock of 128 not out against Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2018. Yuvraj Singh scored 58 off 19 against Delhi Daredevils in 2014 and Kohli scored 58 off 15 versus Gujarat Lions in 2016. Yuvraj hit nine sixes in the death overs in that innings, the most by a batsman in the last four overs in an innings.
89 The most runs by a team in the death overs in an innings, by Royal Challengers Bangalore against Gujarat Lions in 2016. Second on the list is also RCB, scoring 77 against Daredevils in 2013. The highest by one of the other teams is 76 by Daredevils, twice, against Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017 and against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2018.
66 The highest target chased down in the death overs in IPL. KKR did it against RCB last year, when they required 66 runs at the start of 17th over. The next highest is 65 runs chased by Chennai Super Kings against RCB in 2012 and by Rajasthan Royals versus RCB in 2014.
57 The most runs scored by a batsman in the last four overs of a successful chase. Pollard scored 57 off 17 against Sunrisers in 2013. The next highest is 48 off 13 by Russell against RCB in 2019.
5 Most wickets by a bowler in the death overs in a match. Two bowlers have taken five-fors in the last four overs, both for Rising Pune Supergiant against Sunrisers Hyderabad: Adam Zampa in 2016 and Jaydev Unadkat in 2017. Unadkat had done it in the second innings.
