An aggressive hundred from opener Connor Williams and a five-wicket haul by off-spinner Ramesh Powar helped West Zone get the better of South Zone in a Deodhar Trophy day-nighter at Bangalore's MA Chinnaswamy stadium on Sunday.
In the afternoon, South Zone won the toss and put West in. Williams and Vinayak Mane (61 off 71 balls with five fours) laid the foundation for a huge West Zone total with a 140-run second wicket stand following opener Robin Morris' early dismissal.
Despite Mane's dismissal at this juncture, Williams went on to make 112 off 114 balls with 13 fours before becoming the fourth West Zone wicket to fall with the score on 204 in the 39th over. With Abhijit Kale (54* off 46 balls) and Rakesh Dhurv (24* off 22) scoring quick runs in the end overs, West ended up with a formidable 295/6 in their 50 overs.
South made a rousing start to their reply, rattling 126 runs before their first wicket, that of the dashing Ambati Rayudu (73 off 67 balls with eight fours and two sixes), fell. But after that most of the remaining batsmen struggled as the hosts were dismissed for 266.
West Zone were rewarded with four points for their win.
