West Indies v India, 2016

Wisden's review of the first Twenty20 International, West Indies v India, 2016

At Lauderhill, Florida, August 27, 2016. West Indies won by one run. Toss: India.
India may have won the Test series, but World Twenty20 champions West Indies were the favourites when two rather different teams convened in the unfamiliar surroundings of Florida. Most of West Indies' short-format specialists returned and, although Chris Gayle pulled out on the morning of the match with a recurrence of a back injury, the batting was nonetheless led by a hard-hitting left-hander: Evin Lewis, a 25-year-old Trinidadian, spanked a 48-ball century, which included nine sixes.
He took advantage of a strong wind blowing across the Central Broward ground, as his opening stand with the equally explosive Charles piled up 126 in 9.3 overs. When 200 came up in the 16th, a record total was on the cards - but three wickets fell in Bumrah's final over of the innings. Still, 245 was the third-highest in T20 internationals at the time (Australia hit a record 263 less than a fortnight later). Yet India came within a whisker in front of an appreciative crowd made up largely of expats. After two early wickets, Rahul cracked a maiden T20 century, completing his set in all three international formats in just 15 games.
His stand of 89 with Sharma set India on course, then a hundred partnership with Dhoni left eight required from the last over. But Dwayne Bravo was equal to the task. Dhoni needed two from the final delivery - but sliced to third man, where Samuels (who had dropped a sitter from the first ball of the over) held on. West Indies had won by the odd run in 489 - an international record, beating 467 by South Africa and West Indies at Johannesburg in January 2015.
