A decision made ahead of the 2024-25 BBL season may have changed the course of Mitchell Owen's career. The Tasmania and Hobart Hurricanes allrounder went from a middle-order player with a middling domestic record, to a T20 opener with a brace of brutal centuries to his name.

He struck an unbeaten 101 off 64 balls against Sydney Thunder but saved his best for the final against the same opposition: a remarkable 108 off 42 with 11 sixes.

Things could have panned out differently if Owen hadn't clubbed 80 runs off 40 balls as an opener in an intra-club match a few days before the season. "That probably helped me a bit," Owen said after his maiden hundred. "Who knows what would have happened if I got rolled for a duck."

Owen is an intimidating sight at the crease with his long levers and brute strength able to muscle the ball with ease over the boundary.

He followed his BBL success with a magnificent 149 off just 69 balls for Tasmania in the One-Day Cup. Unsurprisingly, franchises have come calling with deals in the SA20 and PSL.
