2.2 to BM Duckett, swing again... and this time a nick behind! Textbook new-ball dismissal, Burger strikes in his second over. Excellent length, plants the seed of indecision for Duckett, whose feet are stuck as he pushes out in defence. Just a feather through to Rickelton and SA have their first. 13/1

17.2 to JL Smith, whipped off the legs, great take by Bosch! That's a super catch to make something of a fairly average ball. It was angled down the leg side, Smith flicked wristily into his pull, but the ball was tracked all the way off the bat at fine leg, and grabbed in the reverse-cup with a dive, low to the left. 102/4 21.2 to JC Buttler, inside edge, join the procession! An awful, unbecoming prod from Buttler, feet stuck in concrete, hands flopping outside the eyeline, and the simplest of snicks to Rickelton! England are in the soup!. 119/7 21.3 to JC Archer, first-ball snick, stunning take at slip! Test match vibes from the World Test Champions! Tidy line and length, a bit of nip into the shoulder of Archer's bat as he jabs hard to defend his off stump, and the edge was dying on Markram as he dived across to his left. Fingers clearly beneath the ball. This innings is dead in the water!. 119/8

18.1 to JG Bethell, driven, edged, deflected, gone! England's innings is officially on the skids! Maharaj looped it up outside Bethell's eyeline, tempting the expansive drive, with no footwork. The nick was a thin one, parried off Rickelton's gloves, but Markram at slip reacted brilliantly, clutching the ball to his chest to deepen England's gloom!. 107/5 20.1 to WG Jacks, good lord, that's a soft wicket! A leading edge from Jacks, whipping through the full length, and scuffed back to the bowler, whose only concern was his impending collision with the non-striker. Barely a celebration, perhaps wickets are just too routine for South Africa!. 117/6 24.2 to AU Rashid, pinged on the front pad, up goes the finger! It was a decent stride but the bat was nowhere near the line... was it missing leg? England review, as well they might. Hitting the top of leg!. 131/9 24.3 to S Baker, splut go the stumps, meh goes England's innings! Sonny Baker plays down the Bakerloo as Maharaj takes the Windrush Line to rush England to a miserable total of 131 in less than half their overs! A tentative stride into the full length, round the wicket, no clue about the flight and guile from the No.1 ODI bowler, and back goes his middle stump.. 131/10 |

18.1 to AK Markram, punched off the back foot, stunning take at cover! No century for Markram, but what an outstanding innings. Hell of a catch too, Smith at full stretch, clinging on in one hand, using his wicketkeeper's training to leap high to his right as if it was a flying outside-edge rather than a full-blooded slap ... but has he grounded it? The umpire says no ... and fair enough. It was firmly in his grasp by the time he rolled across the turf, fingers wrapped around it... distinct from that Starc controversy at Lord's in 2023 (although that was clearly out by any metric other than slo-mo replay). 121/1 20.2 to T Bavuma, inside-out launch... to wide mid-off! Bavuma goes for broke through the full length, bat twisted in his hands... the biggest roar of the day as England seal their moral victory (ahem). 131/2 20.3 to T Stubbs, goes for the reverse-sweep, dragged onto middle stump! A ridiculous match gets even more ridiculous, and Rashid is on a hat-trick! It was a tight off-stump line on the full length, too close to the bat for the shot, and Stubbs couldn't get enough angle on it. 131/3 |
