Wayne Blackman is set to return to Division 1 cricket today in
familiar surroundings but in an unfamiliar role when the eighth
round of the Courts/Suzuki Division 1 competition starts at 1
p.m.
Blackman, who is back after a six-month stint with Paignton in
the Devon League, turns out for Big "B" Spartan against his old
team Mount Gay Maple at Trents.
Speaking yesterday, the 23-year-old said he expects there will
be detractors from his old team but he will be treating the
contest as just another game.
"I think there will be some flares flying around but I don't
mind that," the stylish opener said. "It's up to me to perform
for my new team."
He is expected to partner teenager Corey Yearwood at the top of
the order with captain Ronnie Griffith dropping down into the
middle order.
Blackman said he made the switch to improve his game and get a
better outlook. "Things (with Spartan) seem a bit more advanced
and I know I will play more esponsibly here. It is also a
chance to learn more about various aspects of the game," he
said.
Spartan are on top of the table with 37 points, two more than
Police, following their three-wicket win over United Carlton
last week. Apart from Blackman, they are strengthened by the
return of talented allrounder Mark Lavine who is back from the
Commonwealth Games.
Another team smiling at the return of players is Cable &
Wireless BET, who have grabbed the fast bowling talents of Corey
Collymore from Maple.
The 20-year-old Collymore was linked to Maple during his
schoolboy days, but on his return from England last week
announced that he will be moving to the Wildey-based side.
BET, third on 31 points, are also expected to be bolstered by
the return of powerful left-hander Floyd Reifer and would fancy
their chances against neighbours Banks at the Brewery.
