Palani Subramani is one of the eight players of the Calcutta
Colts Cricket Club who has been invited to play club cricket in
England. Subramani earned this invitation by the dint of sheer
performances. The 20-year old all rounder scored 476 runs and
took 30 wickets with his off spin bowling. The Calcutta Colts CC
played 18 games during their tour of 27 days. The matches were
mainly played against club sides featuring in the Somerset,
Wiltshire and Gloucestershire league.
During the tour, five players managed to get invitations from
various clubs in these three counties. Even though the tour party
has returned to Calcutta, the five have stayed back. They are
Sushil Sikaria, Sanjay Ranjan, Ranesh Biswas, Avishek Roy and
Aditya Dutta. A spokesman of the club informed that Subramani and
Gyasuddin Khan have been invited by agents to play for their
respective clubs from April next year. It will be for them to
decide as to which club they will play for during next season.
The star performers of the club were Ranesh Biswas, who plays for
a first division club in Calcutta. Biswas finished the tour with
a tally of 906 runs with four centuries. Khan and Sushil Sikaria
were close behind with 776 and 553 runs respectively. The best
bowlers on the tour were Mahesh Sharma with 30 wickets and
Abhhisek Roy with 27.
During the tour, the Calcutta Colts team won matches against some
of the top premier division league sides in the Somerset league.
Amongst their victories was a 92-run win over Keynsham Cricket
Club, a top club in the Western League Premier Division. English
players Mark Trescothick and Andrew Caddick turn out regularly
for the club. The other notable victories were against
Northperrot and Winscombe, two clubs that feature within the
first five clubs of the Somerset league.
