Team Great Britain is sending out a 14-man squad to compete at the inaugural junior cricket tournament at the 17th Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Captained by Belmont & Edgware all-rounder Ashley Connick, whose father David represented the senior team, GB are looking to impress in a high-quality field.
There are several interesting features about the squad. Firstly, four players come from London Maccabi Vale who have the biggest representation from any single club. Secondly, Akiva Lieberman is the sole northern representative. The strapping fast bowler has really caught the eye, and looks set to terrorise batsman for many years.
Seven boys - Richard Black, Ben Frais, Ashley Connick, Jacob Holden, Neil Lederman, Jack Malnick and Ben Tibber play Saturday cricket with wicketkeeper/batsman Black also representing the Middlesex under-16 squad.
GB squad: Ashley Connick (capt), Richard Black (wkt), Elliott Coulten, Joshua Gaon, Ben Frais, Ben Frais, Alex Goodman, Jacob Holden, Neil Lederman, Akiva Lieberman, Jack Malnick, Mitchell Lee, Zack Pyzer, Ben Tibber, Alex Ziff
Ashley Connick (Southgate and BECC)
Team captain, aged 17. A fine all-rounder who is a powerful batsman and possesses great seam movement with the ball in his hand. Excellent slip fielder and cousin of teammate Jack Malnick.
Richard Black (Stanmore CC, Herts County under 16 squad and LMV)
Wicketkeeper/batsman. Joint vice-captain. One of the best young talents around on the Jewish cricket circuit and he made Vale's final XI for last season's victorious Stuart Neils Cup final. Plays for Stanmore CC in the Middlesex League
Elliott Coulten (Southgate)
Seam bowler who can hold a bat. Likes to talk on the field. Involved in a much publicised club move from Chigwell & Hainault to Southgate. Is looking to grab some more headlines in the promise land!
Joshua Gaon (LMV)
One of four Vale boys in the squad and he's hoping to do the Rowley Lane outfit proud. A medium-fast seam bowler.
Ben Frais (Eastcote CC & N&N)
Joint vice-captain. Big Ben will be looking to strike fear into the opposition. He made a smooth transition into men's cricket, and has been a very succesful playerr for Eastcote CC for several seasons.
Alex Goodman (QE Boys and MAL)
A great find on MAL's conveyor belt of talented youngsters. The stage is set for some key performances....
Jacob Holden (North Middlesex CC)
One of two members of the squad not currently involved in the Jewish cricket circuit, has represented London Schools on many occasions and plays for North Mioddlesex CC
Neil Lederman (Radlett CC, LMV and my best boy)
Like his father, Lederman is a strapping bowler who looks set to be a fixture at Maccabiahs for years to come. An economical bowler who rarely gives the batsman anything to hit. Had a great campaign last year and is sure to do dad Jonathan proud.
Akiva Lieberman (Manchester JGS)
The talk of Jewish cricket north of the Watford gap. Akiva improves as the days go by. A quick bowler and flashing batsman. He's flying the Manchester flag with the community expectant of a medal return.
Jack Malnick (Highgate & Casual Nomads)
Another multi-talented player who bats, bowls and can even keep wicket. Jack, aged 17, was Nomads' find of last season. A clean hitting batsman who will look to woo the crowds in the land of milk and honey with his destructive style. Has been to Israel several times.
Mitchell Lee (LMV)
Only started playing regular weekend cricket this season following his selection for the Maccabiah, a great athlete, no one will want to chance a quick single to Mitchell
Zack Pyzer (LMV)
Another of the JFS boys, Zack is a natural batsman who has improved greatly over the last 6 months
Ben Tibber (North Middlesex CC)
A medium-pace seam bowler who is hoping to thrive, as well as a natural hitter. Ben has been a star with bat and ball every team he's been watched by the management
Alex Ziff (Nomads)
A big strong attacking batsman who has a current season top-score of 94 not out. A student at Wellingborough School in Oxford, One of the younger members of the squad, Alex also possesses a powerful throw.
Manager: Jeffrey Permutt. Jeff has played for several Jewish clubs and is a fully qualified ECB coach. He also coaches Stanmore's colt's squad.
Coach: Ralph Middlebrook. Another very qualified professional coach and has been coaching in Yorkshire for more than 30 years. His son James is currently in the Essex first team.
