Transvaal cricket yesterday received a R3,6-million boost when it was announced that information technology group Datatec will sponsor the province for the next three seasons.
The sponsorship comes at a time when, significantly, the Transvaal Cricket Board is undergoing major changes - from a restructuring of the coaching setup to a new general manager in Ziggy Wadvalla and a new chairman in Barry Skjoldhammer.
From the top down there is a refreshing air of optimism at Transvaal and the 1997-98 season promises much. That positive outlook extends to the new sponsors who were represented by group director Aubrey Malabie.
In a thoroughly entertaining address, Malabie predicted a successful season for Ken Rutherford's side, which has failed to deliver the goods for the past few seasons despite having the personnel capable of contending for trophies.
Wadvalla, who confirmed that the deal includes title rights to the Transvaal A and B teams and the Premier and Night Series Leagues, said he viewed the agreement as a mutually beneficial business relationship.
"Transvaal cricket has not lived up to expectations for the past few seasons. I firmly believe that will change in 1997-98, which will not only be fantastic for the province but will also increase the profile of our sponsors," said Wadvalla.
Sjkoldhammer also confirmed last night that the name of the board will change shortly to the Gauteng Cricket Board. This will become official after ratification at a special meeting of the clubs afiliated to the TCB early next month.
It was also announced last night that the construction of the new R8,4-million Kent Park Taverners pavilion on the south-east side of the Wanderers stadium is nearing completion. The pavilion will include 18 luxury corporate suites and a gallery section which will seat approximately 1000 supporters.
