Welcome Home Damien Martyn and Good-bye Midland Guildford
Batting supremo and arguably the best in-form of the Australian batsmen, Damien Martyn, joined his team mates and assisted in the demolition of the Midland Guildford CC's highly fancied side in Round 2 of the WACA SunSmart League Pennant's Competition at Lilac Hill.
In a batting performance that was equal to any, Damien Martyn belted Midland Guildford's attack making a majestic 97 runs in less than equal time, including 10 boundaries and 3 sixes, steering the side to victory. It was a nice way for a bloke to celebrate his 29th Birthday.
The foundations to the Barminco sponsored side success had been laid by openers, Langley Angel (86) and Chris Rogers (24) with a first wicket stand of 52. Stuart Karppinen (36) gave a fine batting performance enjoying a promotion in the batting order due to injuries sustained in training during the week by fellow Western Warrior, Darren Wates, who was side lined from batting.
Our boys cruised past Midland Guildford's total of 218 to end up with 289 runs for the loss of 9 wickets at stumps.
In Midland Guildford innings, played the previous Saturday, the home team won the toss and elected to bat on an under-prepared wicket. The opposition was quick to recognise the error in their decision when our bowlers took advantage of the conditions and had them 6 for 72 in quick time. Then a fielding laps saw a seventh wicket partnership of 107 between Worthington (105 no), who was dropped on 26, and Davies (29). Other contributors were Mark Lavender (20) and Brendan Julian (33).
Champion leggy, Brad Oldroyd (5-57) starred in the bowling. Oldroyd, who would be later, named Man of the Match for his contribution to the opposition's low total was supported by Darren Wates (3-57). Peter Waite was spared due to minor injury.
Our 4th Grade 206, Todd McKenzie 54 and Alex Davies 47, defeated Midland Guildford at Lilac Hill, all out 153, Ben Berthon-Jones 3-22 and Danish Cricket Scholarship winner, Bobby Chawla taking 3 for 40.
Editors Note: Thanks to Cyril Hughes and Ian MacNabb's remembrances and apologies to Patrick Cornish of the West Australian for stealing some of his material.
The Buck Stops Here, for good, we hope ...
In spite of considerable resistance from some quarters former South Perth Juniors player Chris "Buck" Rogers was enabled to come back home with an "eleventh hour" clearance received at 9.30 am on the morning of our 1st Grade clash against Midland Guildford CC on Saturday 14th October.
Rogers transfer from University CC to South Perth was mooted a good seven weeks prior to the beginning of the Season. Due to a residential anomaly he was required to gain a clearance from Claremont Nedlands CC, a Club that he had never played for or intended to play for. Claremont Nedlands invoked their rights under the rules and refused a clearance. An appeal was lodged and lost at the WACA but presented an opportunity for a further appeal although Rogers would be thwarted to play for South Perth in the One-Dayer against Combined Metropolitan XI and Round 1 of the first Pennant's match against Fremantle.
A further appeal was lodged that gave the defending party ample time to have it heard and determined prior to Round 2. Again the proponents against Roger's transfer exercised their rights under the rules and insisted that time frame schedules be strictly observed which had the effect that Rogers would be unable to play that round with his preferred Club.
Club management initiated negotiations, bona fide under the rules, with University and Melville CCs to circumvent the delays being invoked by Claremont Nedlands equally bona fide use of the rules against Rogers and us.
In not unusual co-operation between the three Clubs a transfer was affected to Melville CC from University then an immediate Permit was issued to Rogers from Melville to South Perth.
"We are very happy with the outcome", President Ian Waite said.
"The current administration of the Club appreciates that we must endeavour to protect the interests of our own players and members. But, beyond this, we owe a service to the Game and to the players. If a player ultimately believes his advancement and happiness will be best served by playing for a different Club then there is little point in demanding his retention or inhibiting his progress. No one wins and the Game is the eventual looser."
"Both Melville and University share this same philosophy, as do some other Clubs, and I would like to place on public record our appreciation for their co-operation and understanding." Ian Waite concluded.
Suburban Turf Division Whacks Claremont Nedlands
Our Carrier-apac sponsored A Grade and Mazda City sponsored B Grade sides met Claremont Nedlands CC's STA division in Round 1 of the Western Australian Suburban Turf Association's 2-Day competition.
The Cool Team played at home at EJ Oval and were put into bat on a wicket that mirrored the effects of a wet winter. Fortunately the opposition was unable to take advantage of the conditions and as a consequence our A Graders were enabled to amass at total of 251 runs in their first innings.
Former South Perth WACA player, Blain "Jobble" Heddle (3 for 35), recently returned from two years of extensive international and national wanderings added decided strength to the teams bowling attack employing his devious leg breaks with medium pacer and A Grade Skipper, Brad Parsons (3 for 13) in destroying the opposition at all-out for 84.
We sent the opposition into bat for their second innings in an attempt to gain an outright victory but time denied that pleasure. At stumps Claremont Nedlands were 6 for 118.
Geoff "the Bagman" Shinners (118) ensured that he would gain attention at the bar that night and be amongst the trophy winners at the end of the year when he was the first South Perth player this season to notch up a century in the Clubs B Grade demolition of Claremont Nedlands.
Our Mazda City B Graders scored a total of 316 runs and managed to squeeze a win against the oppositions 21.
Unfortunately our Pinetec sponsored C Grade side had nowhere near the same success and was defeated by Applecross.
Barminco Confirms Sponsorship for 3rd Year
The indauntable Trevor Thomson maintains Barminco's support, yet again.
"We were delighted to receive Barminco's tangible expression of their support this season" President Ian Waite commented.
"Collectively this brings their support over the three seasons to in excess of $10 000."
"Barminco's continuing interest, and indeed Trevor Thomson's influence, is greatly appreciated. Funds will assist in direct player benefits to our WACA 1st Grade side and to the Club generally." Ian concluded.
WACA Colts Notch Up First Success
Hugh Brown, Captain of the WACA Colts side won the toss and elected to bat against a Combined Metropolitan XI side at Richardson Park on Sunday 15th October in the first match in the Swan Mid Colts Competition this year.
It was supposed to be an away game however officials approached the Club to host the game due to the anticipated venue, Veryard Reserve, being unavailable.
The home ground proved a decided advantage.
The grass in the outfield must have grown 5mm overnight and this together with the ill effects of recent top dressing proved that boundaries were going to be hard to come by. Nevertheless Ben Spencer (30) and Mathew Latham (59) opened the batting and amassed 99 runs before the loss of the first wicket. Then followed Hugh Brown (34), Brett Gardiner (24), Gavin Ryan (3), David Kidner (13 n.o) Mark Penter (3) and Morgan Rushbrook (1 n.o). A credible total of 6/192 off 50 overs.
A fiendish plot developed by Colts Coach Rodney Redmond and executed by Skipper Hugh Brown to cover up the fact that we had only one recognised pace bowler, Bournemouth-South Perth Scholarship holder, David Kidner (2 for 30 off 7.5 overs), in our attack. The tactic saw 16 year old leg spinner, Mark Penter (3 for 8 off 10 overs) and 15 year old up and coming all rounder, Morgan Rushbrook, (1 for 38 off 8 overs) open our bowling attack. This befuddled the opposition and assisted by good fielding, that enabled three run-outs, ultimately saw our opponents all-out in the 45th over for 137 runs. Assisting in the win were part-time bowlers, Sam Hagdorn, S. Boyes and 4th Grade die hard, Ben Berthon-Jones. Scott Marshall was not required to bat or bowl but performed credibly in the field and was a welcome inclusion in the team. WACA 1st Grade paceman, Peter Waite was assistant Coach.
Mark Penter was declared Player of the Round at victory celebrations in the Clubrooms.
Bruce Laird Shield
The Bruce Laird Shield has become the most prestigious Cricket event amongst the district's elite young cricketers. A genuine showcase of local talent from which future senior representative players for both Grade and First Class cricket will come from.
The Shield is played between first XI teams from Wesley College, Aquinas College, Kent Street Senior High School and a President's XI from the South Perth Cricket Club.
The Shield is scheduled to be contested over Monday 22nd January through to Wednesday 25th January 2001 at Richardson Park.
The WACA supports and sponsors the event with the supply of Umpires. Semi-retired umpiring icon and Club Member, Albert Richings will again hand pick the Umpires for this year's matches.
Mueleman's, the Cricket Specialists Centre, will, for the 3rd year, support the Shield through the donation of match balls.
Each player receives a training shirt, which develops much currency amongst participants. A commemorative playing cap will also be provided to our players who are selected in the 15-man squad.
Australian High Commission in Islamabad Sinks Paki's Tour
Last minute representations made by the Australian Cricket Board to the Australian High Commission in Islamabad to review their rejection of visa application by the Real Twelve Brothers Cricket Club failed to have the desired effect.
As a consequence the tour has been cancelled. Richard Watson, General Manager, Operations at the ACB wished to convey his thanks to South Perth for the willingness to host the Pakistan Club and willingness to arrange matches for them.
WACA Grants Assist Club
President, Ian Waite, represented the Club at a WACA President's Evening during the month to receive a cheque for $6 000 being the first installment in the WACA's annual grant to District Cricket Clubs.
"The funds represent a combination of direct grants by the WACA as well as sponsorship support from the likes of Swan Brewery, Healthway, and Kookaburra. These funds are applied to the general benefit of all members. This year we are anticipating WACA grants to be about $14 000, slightly down on last year's expectation, probably due to lower than anticipated returns from the Lilac Hill Festival Match."
"We also heard that BGC was a potential new sponsor to the WACA and that advertisements would be appearing to promote attendance and public interest in the Pennant's competition. A very welcome move if it can be achieved." Ian commented
Inaugural Match Played by South Perth CC's Suburban Turf Colt's Side
An Under 19's Colt's Team has been formed within the South Perth Cricket Club to play in the Western Australian Suburban Turf Cricket Association's (limited overs) Colt's Competition.
At their first outing played at the Club's third turf wicket venue, Earnest Johnson Oval on Sunday 22nd October.
The initiative was put in place by Ian Furnivall, South Perth Cricket Club, Director of Cricket for the Suburban Turf Division of the Club, and his team.
"The formation of the team compliments the Club's participation in the Under 21's WACA Colts competition and expands the Clubs ability to provide games and opportunities from junior players in the South Perth District in their transition from Junior to Senior representative cricket." Ian Waite, President commented.
Inquiries from potential players are welcome by calling the South Perth Cricket Club on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, or on the weekend, on 9367 2844.
Newcomers Feature When WACA Sides Salvage 2 Wins From Fremantle
WACA teams faced Fremantle in their 1st Round matches of the SunSmart Pennants Competition and managed two wins out of four games.
The Barminco sponsored 1st Grade side played at home and elected to bat. Early season jitters saw the top order crumble in face of a determined Fremantle attack. At 9 for 91 Peter Waite (21) joined newcomer to the Club, Brad Oldroyd (11 n.o) and made a last wicket stand of 38 runs that only marginally increased the respectability of the score to, All Out 129.
This proved too meager to defend. Brad Oldroyd's 3 for 34 took his tally of first grade wickets to 200 and Darren Wates' had an impressive 5 for 43. Fremantle won on first innings by 64 runs.
The Talbot & Olivier sponsored 2nd Graders won their match at Stevens Reserve with an excellent debut performance by visiting Danish Scholarship holder Freddy Klokker who made 38 n.o in his 1st innings and 40 in his second and featured behind the stumps with 3 very good catches.
The 3rd Grade side were bundled out for 80 runs and ended up successfully defending a potential outright defeat notwithstanding the considerable efforts of visiting Bournemouth Scholarship holder, David Kiddner who had a brilliant 7 for 40. The 4th Grade team won an inspiring victory. This match featured a team spirit that flags are won by. 14-year-old Steve Allen played his debut senior grade game for the Club and impressed with his respect for his wicket and approach to the game. Also former Perth CC players, Paul Campo, playing his first game with the Club made a handsome 56 runs.
Hebbsey's "D" Grade side won by forfeit in The Suburban Turf Competition. Hebbsey was named Player of the Round for cleaning out the STA's storeroom.
These together with a win against a Combined Metropolitan XI in the previous week gave the Club, at the time, a tally of four victories out of six matches so far.

Sticky Wicket Greets Cool Team's Season Opener
The opening WACA BankWest Cup One-Day Competition was played against a Combined Metropolitan XI at Scott Reserve, High Wycombe on Monday 2nd October.
Host Club, High Wycombe CC, who plays in the WASTA Competition, presented a wicket that on initial inspection looked great however played dead. Two weeks previously the center square was the bounce down area for footy however their Club deserves real credit, under the circumstances, in the quality of wicket they were able to produce.
Our Carrier-apac Cool Team skipper, Paul McKenzie, elected to bat and our blokes found the going tough against tight bowling and good defensive fielding. At 9 for 116 it didn't look good with Darren Wates the only batsman that looked like taking control at one stage until he was dismissed at 20. Debutant to WACA 1st Grade, Nick Middleton (25) combined with newcomer Brad Oldroyd (11 n.o) to post a last wicket stand of 29 with Nick Middleton being dismissed in the 49th over with a team total at 145.
Two quick and masterful run-outs by the Wates' boys, aggressive fielding and dedication to the task in hand resulted in the Cool Team bundling the opposition out for a meager 99. Stuart Karpinnen with 3/14, Brad Oldroyd 2/34 off 10 overs, Gavin Wates 2/15 and Craig Higgins 1/12. Hugh Brown took 4 good catches behind the stumps.
A good start to the Season by the WACA Cool Team witnessed by birthday celebrants, Life Member and WACA 1st Grade Scorer, Charlie Bull, his 79th and Langley Angel celebrating his 27th.

Gilpear Group Again Grants General Support
Former South Perth WACA and STA player Ed Gilfillan and the evergreen, Richard "Bulldog" Lynch of the Gilpear Group have once again ravaged their treasury and come forth with a considerable donation to assist the Club generally.
This altruistic annual event is very much appreciated. Thank you guys.
Pinetec Sponsorship Renewed
Life Member, John "JJ" Jacobs, Managing Director of WA's dominant pallet maker, Pinetec Industries, have again come to the aid of the South Perth Cricket Club.
Pinetec's sponsorship funds are primarily directed to the benefit of the Suburban Turf Division of the Club and are a welcome investment for training shirts for the boys and offset general expenses in this area.
Thank you JJ.
News From Bournemouth
A recent e-mail from Martin Miller, Club Captain, Bournemouth CC:
"... you might like to know that Toby Sharpe took 18 wickets for us this season and was a regular opening bowler for our County side which were eventually national champions."
"Many people commented on how he had developed since the end of last season and I think that whilst much credit must go to Toby for the hard work and dedication to practice that he has put in himself, you and your colleagues must take the remainder of the praise for the assistance which you obviously gave him."
"When I think that Mark Ligtermoet probably didn't have one decent net session all summer and had to rely solely on us "old-hands" on the pitch and in the bar for guidance on where and how to bowl in English conditions, I am embarrassed about the gulf in coaching and practice differences that blatantly exists between our two clubs".
Editor's Note: Ligter seems not to have suffered too badly due to his English "coaching" experience based on his current form this season. Maybe we all should spend more times at the bar listening to "old hands".
South Perth's 2nd and 3rd Grade sides lost their matches at home.
Mini Obituary to Eddy Edwards
Former Playing Member Harold William Frank "Eddy" Edwards moved, with his wife, to Perth from England to be in time for the 1946'47 cricket season and immediately joined the South Perth Cricket Club. That year he played in the WACA 2nd Grade Premiership side and for the next two or three seasons played for both the 1st and 2nd Grade teams in what most older members refer to as the "Golden" age of the Club.
He had grown up in Tonbridge, Kent, excelling on the cricket and rugby fields. He graduated in Engineering at London University. He was called up in World War II as a pilot in the RAF and flew Catalina flying boats with Coastal Command. He finished as a Squadron Leader and was awarded an Air Force Cross.
In his cricketing days at South Perth he presented to his fellow Club mates as a gentleman in manner and speech, a great character, apparently a stereotypical RAF Ex-Squadron Leader of that era.
When, in a form slump, he blamed the bedazzlement of the bright WA sunshine. He created quite a stir in cricketing circles when he went to the crease sporting the latest in sunglasses, something that had never been seen before.
In the off-season he refereed Rugby and became a State selector.
For employment he worked for the PMG and rose to second in command telecommunications engineer. He retired in 1973.
He was lured into the fledgling WA Ballet Company as their Publicity Office, probably due to his expertise with the camera. He would later become their long serving President.
His other interests included the WA Camera Club, The RAAF Museum at Bull Creek and the Fremantle Sailing Club.
He passed away in October 2000 in his 85th year. Connie, their son Tony and his wife Lyn, grandchildren Derek and Mark; and his brother Cyril survive him.
Eddy has inspired many throughout his life in Western Australia and served the community well for 54 years. He steadfastly lived by the two-word motto of RAF Coastal Command: Constant Endevour.
