LAST YEAR's runners-up, Sims Central Sports got it right the second
time around when they whipped Moosai Sports by 16 runs in a
rain-affected Carib Sunday League cricket final at the Queen's Park
Oval yesterday.
Chasing a reduced target of 108 in 24 overs, Moosai, who were
struggling from the word go, were finally put out of their misery when
they were dismissed for 92 midway through the final over.
Central Sports, had actually accumulated 125 for the loss of five
wickets in 28 overs but the target was revised after a second rain
interruption around 4 p.m.
Just after mid-day, the first delay had lasted for some two hours and
robbed each side of 12 overs batting.
Moosai began in disastrous fashion when openers James Dodds and Neil
Persad were both dismissed with the score on 11 and when rain chased
the players off the field they were reeling on 19 for three with 10
overs already gone.
The second stoppage lasted less than half-hour but when they returned
the pattern continued as wickets kept falling at regular intervals.
Only skipper Aniel Rajah (18) and West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop
(15) reached double figures as Rukham Ramoutar completely dominated
proceedings. The veteran off-spinner picked up four wickets for 27
runs and received admirable support from Mahadeo Bodoe and former West
Indies wicket-keeper David Williams, who took two wickets apiece.
Williams must have been disappointed when he lost the toss and was
sent in to bat under overcast skies. And there must have been more
concern when former West Indies quickie Anthony Gray bowled Anderson
Persad with just nine runs on the board.
But national opener Daren Ganga and Gavri Ramlogan then added 77
valuable runs which proved to be the match-winning partnership.
Ramlogan fell one short of what would have been a well-deserved
half-century and Ganga notched 34.
Williams and Bodoe then kept up the momentum with 14 and 12
respectively. The first-time champions thwarted Moosai's attempt to
win the title for the third time in four years and picked up $8,000
for the their efforts.
