Brain Davison was a fast -scoring right-hand batsman and outstandingly athletic fielder who forged a successful career with Leicestershire, but strangely failed to reproduce the same kind of form when playing for Rhodesia. In England he passed 1000 runs in a season 13 times, and in 1971 won the Walter Lawrence Trophy for the fastest hundred of the summer. He came to notice in England when there with the International Cavaliers and after a brief qualification period, made his county debut in 1970, helping them to a Championship and several one-day titles over the next 14 seasons. His time at Grace Road ended sadly with a financial dispute, and he was released at the end of 1983 to move to Tasmania where he enjoyed a productive late career, eventually emigrating there and becoming an MP. He had one final summer in England, with Gloucestershire in 1985. In Rhodesia his high point was in the final of the Datsun Shield in 1977-78 when he scored 102* to help his side to their first major South African trophy. He also represented his country at hockey.
