Conor McKerr was a member of the South Africa Under-19 squad for the 2016 Youth World Cup in Bangladesh. He left South Africa to sign for Surrey in March 2016, with the intention of building a county career and qualifying to play for England.

Injuries slowed his progress, but in 2017 he joined Derbyshire on a one-month loan and took four wickets on debut in the East Midlands debut against Nottinghamshire. His second Championship appearance for Derbyshire, against Northamptonshire, went even better as he became the youngest bowler to take 10 wickets in a match for the county. A Surrey Championship debut followed by the end of the season albeit with less success.

In the title-winning season in 2018, he was one of a plethora of fast bowlers used, and impressed with his pace, taking 7 for 47 in a match against Nottinghamshire and clearly reaping the benefits of working with Morne Morkel. Injuries limited his opportunities in the first team in 2019, and there were few highlights when he did get on the field. He was limited to three appearances for Surrey in 2022, before finishing the season on loan at Kent.
