A tall, accurate left-arm spinner, Dan Moriarty broke into Surrey's first team to impressive effect during the curtailed 2020 summer. He claimed a five-for on first-class debut, against Middlesex in the Bob Willis Trophy, followed that up with match figures of 11 for 224 to help seal victory over Sussex in the final round, and finished as Surrey's leading wicket-taker in the Vitality Blast, as they lost out to Nottinghamshire in the final. His competitive nature led club captain Rory Burns to suggest Moriarty had "a little bit of Gareth Batty about him".
Born in Reigate to an English father and South Africa mother, Moriarty was raised in Botswana and South Africa. He briefly played for South Africa Under-19s before moving to the UK aged 18 and winning opportunities with Surrey's 2nd XI.ESPNcricinfo staff
