James Grundy was one of England's leading roundarm bowlers in the era when professional teams were really taking hold and the game was spreading across the country with the railways. Bowling at quite a pace, with the occasional underarm delivery thrown in, it was written of his consistency he "could keep on dropping 'em on a cheese plate". His career spanned two decades from 1850, and in 1864 he took 106 wickets at around five each. He was one of the 12 professionals who made the first major international tour to North America in the autumn of 1859.
