In 1953-54, aged 19, he scored 57 and 115 - including 36 off four overs from Alex Moir - and in 1955-56 toured India and Pakistan where he made 313 runs at 34.77, including a dour seven-hour 102 at Hyderabad. His only other tour was to South Africa in 1961-62 where he failed in the Tests, although he made 533 runs on the tour as a whole.
