Live Report - IPL 2023 - Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kolkata Knight Riders, Hyderabad

By Sidharth Monga

KKR leave SRH in a world of trouble

So that's that then. Another dramatic, chaotic night of IPL. This win doesn't do a big deal for KKR yet, but leaves SRH in big trouble. We leave you with a teaser from our match report. Thanks for joining us.
CV Varun bowled overs 16, 18 and 20 for eight runs and one wicket to register an improbable win for Kolkata Knight Riders against Sunrisers Hyderabad, only their fourth in 10 matches. The defeat left SRH in an identical situation to KKR’s before the match: three wins in six matches. Both sides continued to be in must-win territory.
When Heinrich Klaasen was dominating at the start of the second half of the chase, it seemed like a cruise for SRH in the chase of 172. Needing 48 off the last eight, Klaasen fell to Shardul Thakur’s golden arm, and then Varun choked SRH with help from Vaibhav, who got the wicket of Aiden Markram in the 17th over.

CV Varun does it for KKR

What a last over from Varun. Into the pitch so they can't hit down the ground. More often than not, slow, so they can't hit it over the square boundary. Varun's last two overs: 2-0-4-1. They win by five runs.
Look at our forecaster to see how wildly the game swung.

Varun puts KKR ahead

First ball: fired into the pitch, single to long-on. Samad off strike
Second ball: slow offbreak, leg-bye, Ssmad back on trike.
Third ball: slow, into the pitch, Samad pulls but there is no pace to work with. Caught at deep midwicket. Seven off three now. Mayank Markande the new batter.

Grandstand finish

Bhuvneshwar Kumar hits a four first ball, Abdul Samad hits one more, and we are into the last over with nine required. CV Varun to bowl it. His last over produced zero boundary. SRH three ahead of the par score, but it won't matter. It looks we will have a full last over.

Gurbaz sticks a hand out

The game refuses to die down. At the start of the 19th over, Rahmanullah Gurbaz dives to his left to take a stunning catch off the inside edge of Marco Jansen. It is 152 for 7, which is the par score at this time.

Drizzle to add drama

It has begun drizzling in Hyderabad to add another twist to the game. At the end of 18 overs, SRH are one ahead of the DLS par score. They are 151 for 6, and need 21 off the last two. The par scores are 160/6, 160/7, 161/8, 165/9 at end of the 19th over.

Game still on

Aiden Markram has faced 40 balls for a run-a-ball knock, and has now played a low-percentage shot to leave it up to Abdul Samad and Marco Jansen. At 27 off 20, he tries to flat-bat a high bouncer - would have been wide had he not hit it - over cover but ends up offering a catch to long-off. If SRH are to win, they will have to do so through their weak links.

Spin at death?

CV Varun has just bowled an excellent 16th over with no boundary, and a couple of mis-hits falling just short of fielders. SRH need 34 off the last four. KKR are a maverick team. Should they defend with spin? They have two overs each from Sunil Narine and Varun, and one from Anukul Roy.

Thakur turns the game again

Just as it starts to look easy with eight an over required over the last six overs with six wickets in hand, Shardul Thakur returns to have Heinrich Klaasen caught at long-on. It is an on-pace length ball, and the shot is on, but that is what Thakur does. Just ends up toe-ending it.
You'd think SRH are still the favourites, but you also know their batting outside of Klaasen and Aiden Markram has been almost non-existent, and Markram is on a run-a-ball 33. Abdul Samad joins him. Marco Jansen is next.

Klaasen opens up his arms

After the fall of Brook's wicket, Heinrich Klaasen and Aiden Markram go into proper rebuilding mode, going 19 straight deliveries without attempting a boundary ket alone hitting one. Anukul Roy starts his third over with 97 required off the last 10, but it seems KKR have gone once too often to the well. Klaasen takes Anukul down with two clean sixes, one over long-off and a 101-metre monster over midwicket.
KKR still have four overs from CV Varun and three from Sunil Narine, but the momentum is shifting. Aiden Markram follows it up with two square-cut boundaries off Varun in his first over. Now they need 70 off the last eight.

Anukul gets Brook for duck

Surely Anukul Roy was not their first choice as the Impact Player. Thy got him in because they didn't have runs on the board and had lost too many wickets with balls to spare. Still he is the first spinner deployed, and he gets Harry Brook on the paddle sweep. They are 57 for 4 in the seventh over.

Tripathi vs Russell = fireworks

Andre Russell can crank it up. Rahul Tripathi loves pace. All fireworks. Cut over cover for four. Ramped for six. Driven over for four. Ramp again but the slower ball, and caught at fine leg.
SRH 53 for 3 in the sixth over.

Abhishek falls too

SRH have been among the worst sides at the top of the order this IPL, and both their openers are gone inside four overs. It is 37 for 2 in 3.5 overs.

Harshit Rana gets Agarwal

Not the greatest start for Harshit Rana as he took the new ball but in the second over he has bowled a sharp bounce to take Mayank Agarwal's glove through to the keeper. SRH 29 for 1 in three overs. Agarwal's season so far: 177 runs in 159 balls.

That's the last over, bowled by T Natarajan. KKR had looked good at 90 for 3 at the halfway mark but Mayank Markande led a shutdown of their batting in the second half. He ends up with 4-0-29-1 after being introduced in the 11th over. Every bowler in the SRH attack has good figures to show, including Aiden Markram, who bowled three overs for 24 and the wicket of the threatening Nitish Rana.

KKR sacrifice Suyash Sharma

KKR lose their seventh wicket with 15 balls to go. With the score 151 for 7, they clearly think they need more out of these 15 balls than out of Suyash Sharma's four overs. They sub in Anukul Roy to go bat with Rinku Singh.

Now the Bhuvi knuckle ball

Bhuvneshwar Kumar come back in the 16th over, and has Sunil Narine caught at short straight cover with a well-disguised knuckle ball. KKR are 130 for 6 in 15.3 overs. They will want some magic from Rinku Singh - 28 off 23 - and Shardul Thakur, the new batter in.

Russell. Wristspin. Out

Andre Russell has been waiting for anything in his winging arc and going straight. He has hit two sixes already, one off fingerspin, one off Mayank Markande's wristspin. Markande is not shy of flighting it. He goes full again, but cleverly he drags it wider, out of his reach, and draws the edge for short third to catch. Some promise, but eventually out for 24 off 15. That takes Russell's season to 166 off 112. He hasn't wasted balls, but KKR would definitely have wanted more off his bat. KKR 127 for 5 in the 15th over.

Captain gets captain

There is some grip in the surface and two left-hand batters in the middle, which has allowed Aiden Markram to slip in a third over. With the offbreak, he draws a top edge from Nitish Rana, and then runs towards mid-on and dives at the last moment to take a sensational catch. In comes Andre Russell with a wristspinner active. KKR 96 for 4 in 11.2 overs.

Bowl short to Nitish Rana. That is always the plan, but he has been good against the short ball this year as Kartik Tyagi found out in the 10th over. At 90 for 3 in 10 overs, KKR have made a good comeback from the early wickets.

His first over back in the IPL had a bit of everything. Wides, no-ball, boundaries, but the massive wicket of Jason Roy. It was a cross-seam ball, dug short, took the toe end on the pull, and ballooned to short third. KKR 40 for 3 in five overs.

That last ball is a perfect bouncer that Venkatesh Iyer can only glove. Only three balls after edging one past first slip. Not looking good for KKR: 16 for 2 in two overs.

Golden duck for Gurbaz

A long wait to see Jason Roy and Rajmanullah Gurbaz bat together, but Gurbaz is out first ball. He walks at Marco Jansen, but can't control the bounce at all. Caught at mid-on. KKR 8 for 1 in 1.1 overs.

Kartik Tyagi is fit for SRH, and he is in the XVI. SRH have gone heavy on pace with Marco Jansen and Tyagi both named in the starting XI.

Battle for survival

It's match 47 of IPL 2023. We are entering the crunch phase. Both these teams are on six points, but Sunrisers Hyderabad have a game in hand. Kolkata Knight Riders can't afford to lose. If they lose, they need to win every thing and then hope other results go their way. We are in SRH's home ground.
KKR have called up Johnson Charles to replace Litton Das. Shardul Thakur is available but Umesh Yadav isn't. SRH have not called up a replacement for Washington Sundar, who is ruled out of the IPL with a hamstring injury.
We will find out more about the teams in a bit.
