New Zealand vs West Indies, 2nd ODI at Napier, , Dec 29 2013 - Ball by Ball Commentary

ABANDONED
2nd ODI (D/N), Napier, December 29, 2013, West Indies tour of New Zealand

Match abandoned without a ball bowled

5.30 pm Uh oh, they have decided to call it off, in bright sunshine. Boos from the people basking on the grass banks, but the outfield has taken too much of a pounding, there are puddles around still, and the umpires are unwilling to risk it. The series will resume in 2014 now, with the third ODI slated for New Year's Day in Queenstown down south, where the forecast at the moment is for er, rain. We'll see you all on the first morning of 2014. Goodbye

5.25 pm Ain't looking all that great, there is another scattered build-up of rain closing in on Napier on the radar

5.05 pm Umpires out and going around the outfield. Supersopper out, skies have cleared up and it is much brighter

4.15 pm Umpires will have a lookaround at 5 pm. The radar showing all clear for Napier now

4.10 pm And a drizzle begins...

4.05 pm The outfield has taken a lot of water, and there seems to be some more coming

3.15 pm The rain has stopped but it is quite overcast. The groundstaff have started their work in the middle

2.40 pm It has lightened up considerably now

2.30 pm It's become a shade lighter, but still coming down. Again, an hour to get going, but that kicks in only if the downpour relents.

1.30 pm It is coming down properly at McLean Park, and the pitch is under covers. It was a drizzle a while ago, but it has picked up, and the groundsman says the outfield is getting wet now, which will only add to all the clean-up work his men will have to do. Upto an hour after the rain stops for us to get going, he reckons.
