IPL 2025 auction: RCB bag Bhuvneshwar, D Chahar goes to Mumbai

Overview

How did day two go?

After Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Venkatesh Iyer got record bids, the second day saw Bhuvneshwar Kumar rake in big money. He was picked for INR 10.75 crore by RCB. Here is how the full squads line up for IPL 2025.
Here are a few more highlights from the second day of the auction.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar was picked up by RCB after a fierce bidding war.
  • Krunal Pandya was also picked by RCB for 5.75 crore.
  • Mukesh Kumar was scooped up by Punjab Kings for 6.5 crore, but DC exercised their RTM option and picked him for 8 crore.
  • There was a bidding war for Deepak Chahar as well and he finally went to MI for 9.25 crore
  • Akash Deep meanwhile went to LSG for 8 crore
  • MI had a few fresh faces as well. They picked up Allah Ghazanfar for 4.80 crore and uncapped NZ batter Bevon Jacobs for 30 lakh
  • Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 13-year-old was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for 1.1 crore.
  • Priyansh Arya meanwhile went to PBKS for 3.8 crore after a bidding war with RCB.
  • There were a few shockers too. Shardul Thakur got no takers, neither did David Warner, Kane Williamson, Jonny Bairstow, Prithvi Shaw and Daryl Mitchell.
  • Sri Lanka's Eshan Malinga and New Zealand's Bevon John-Jacobs were the only two uncapped overseas players who were sold today.
Before the auction, Nagraj Gollapudi had picked how much the highest bids could end up being, and he got most bids right.
So, after two days of exhilarating auction action, the squads for IPL 2025 are ready. Now for the tournament to get started in a few months’ time. We have had a lot of fun presenting the IPL auction and thanks everyone for tuning in. On behalf of S Sudarshanan and Deivarayan Muthu, this is me Ashish Pant signing off. Ciao!

Meet Bevon-John Jacobs, MI's latest recruit

Deivarayan Muthu, our NZ expert has this on Bevon-Jacobs: The only uncapped NZ player to have made the cut for the IPL auction earns a maiden IPL deal with MI. Jacobs, 22, was born in Pretoria in South Africa before his family emigrated to NZ when he was young. Jacobs first province in NZ was Canterbury before he moved to Auckland ahead of the 2024-25 domestic season. He slotted in as a finisher in the 2023-24 Super Smash for Canterbury and his strike rate reads 188.73 after nine T20s. Only Doug Bracewell (202.02) had a better batting strike rate than Jacobs in the 2023-24 Super Smash (min 50 balls faced). Jacobs also has some T20 exposure outside of NZ, having featured in the Queensland T20 league. He made his Plunket Shield debut for Auckland last month.

C Andre Siddarth, 18, is the nephew of Sridharan Sharath, the former TN stalwart and the current national selector. After impressing in the pre-season Buchi babu tournament, Siddarth was fast-tracked into TN’s Ranji side and played in the XI ahead of someone like Vijay Shankar. Siddarth had a good start to his first-class career, scoring four fifties in his first six innings. At the TNPL, he represents the Chepauk Super Gillies. He hits every variety of spin, including wristspin, but his game against pace is still a work in progress. Here's more on Priyansh Arya, PBKS's 3.8 crore buy

By Nikhil Sharma
Arya loves hitting sixes down the ground
In the very first match of the Delhi Premier League, against Old Delhi 6, Arya hit 57 runs in 30 balls, and followed it up with 82 in 51 balls against Central Delhi Kings, hitting seven sixes. The carnage continued. Against East Delhi Strikers, he scored 53 in 32 balls, against Old Delhi 6, he hit 107 runs in 55 balls, and against Central Delhi he again scored 88 in 42 balls.
Then came that innings that made headlines. South Delhi Superstarz scored 308 for 5 in their 20 overs against North Delhi Strikers, and Arya contributed 120 in 50 balls in that. That was the game in which he hit Manan Bharadwaj, a left-arm spinner who even sent one delivery in right-handed to try something different, for six sixes in an over, the 12th of the innings. All of Arya's sixes were in the "V" down the ground.
Overall, his 608 runs came at a strike rate of 198.69 and an average of 67.56. He his 43 sixes in those ten innings.
The Gautam Gambhir connection
Arya's parents are teachers in a government school in Delhi, and he trains under Sanjay Bhardwaj, Gautam Gambhir's former coach.
"When I was young, I used to watch Gautam Gambhir sir bat in the nets," Arya told ESPNcricinfo during the Delhi Premier League. "When I grew up a little, I started talking to him. Apart from this, Ayush Badoni [of Lucknow Super Giants] is my good friend. He is also our captain in the Delhi Premier League and he has IPL experience also. So I interact with him a lot on and off the pitch and his experience is very useful to me."
You can read Nikhil's full piece on Arya here.

More recently, he impressed with the new ball for SL A in the Emerging T20 Asia Cup. A 6'3" left-arm seamer, Gurjapneet Singh was born in Ludhiana (Punjab) and grew up in Ambala (Haryana), before he moved to Chennai when he was about 17. Seven years later, on his Ranji Trophy debut against former champions Saurashtra, he bagged 6 for 22, the best figures in a first-class innings by a TN fast bowler at home since 2005-06. During the process, he dismissed Pujara for a duck.

Venugopal Rao, Director of Cricket, Delhi Capitals (IPL) said, “This time, our batting and bowling is very compact. Our bowling lineup is experienced. We have strengthened our fast bowling with Starc, Natarajan, Mohit and Mukesh, who are all experienced. They will combine with our spinners Axar and Kuldeep, so our bowling lineup is very experienced. Batters will win matches for us, but bowlers will win us the title.”
On acquiring IPL veteran du Plessis, Sourav Ganguly, Director of Cricket, Delhi Capitals (WPL) and JSW Sports, said, “He has been very good in this (T20) format. He had a terrific CPL and MLC. Mumbai were big on an Indian swing bowler. They missed out on Bhuvneshwar, but they've got Chahar who could form a potent partnership with Bumrah and Boult. Chahar was troubled by injuries in IPL 2024, but is fit again. He proved his form and fitness recently by playing the first five rounds of the Ranji Trophy, India's premier domestic tournament. He is also currently playing for Rajasthan in the 20-over Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In the Ranji fixture against HP in Dharamsala, he swung the new ball and ripped through their line-up to come away with five wickets in ten overs.

Akash Ambani on MI's auction

"In the auction, you have to plan for disappointing losses. We lost some players but our playing 12 is locked in now and we’re very happy about it. Disappointed to lose some ex-MI players. In the last two years, we’ve thought about the balance we need to get back to winning ways. For that we have to handle the emotional aspect too."

Who is Allah Ghazanfar, MI's latest recruit?

Here's Deivarayan Muthu: AM Ghazanfar, 18, is the next big mystery spinner from Afghanistan. He has a number of variations in his repertoire, including the carrom ball and wrong’un, and his action is very similar to that of India’s mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy. Ghazanfar recently befuddled both South Africa and Bangladesh with his variations in ODI series in the UAE. Also, during the Emerging T20 Asia Cup against India A, he operated with the new ball and took out both Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh. He can also bowl at the death. Ghazanfar has already has a taste of the IPL, having won the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders as a replacement player earlier this year. He didn’t get a game, however, during IPL 2024.

Marco Jansen could be in high demand

Nagraj Gollapudi: Could Marco Jansen become the most expensive buy on the day 2 of the auction? I see you raising the quizzical eyebrow because Jansen is remembered for suffering yips in a close contest against Gujarat Titans where he failed to defend 22 runs off the final over of the match against Rashid Khan.
But the South African allrounder, who was with SRH over the last three IPL seasons for 4.2 crore, is being talked about among franchise think tanks a serious prospect because he can bowl fast, brings variety as a left-arm quick, and, importantly is a vastly improved and dangerous batter. Recently Jansen set up his bating stall in Centurion when he nearly helped South Africa chased down 219-run target against India with a blistering 17-ball 54.
Several franchises need an overseas fast bowler as well as allrounder. Expect Mumbai, Punjab to be among teams gunning for the tall South African.

In the spotlight: Faf du Plessis

One of the batters who will be up for bidding soon - in the first set of the day - is Faf du Plessis, who led RCB in the last couple of seasons. Earlier in the year, he captained St Lucia Kings to their maiden title in CPL 2024. He was their second-highest run-getter as well. At over 40 years, he is one of the older players in this auction and there will be intrigue around which team choses him. He is currently in action in the Abu Dhabi T10, leading the run charts there. Du Plessis himself, though, is unsure if he will find a team for IPL 2025.
"You never know with IPL. I've played a lot of cricket in the IPL, and I know with auctions, nothing is guaranteed," du Plessis said after last night's game. "I don't even know what's going on. I don't think my name has come up yet. So let's see. I mean, there's a lot of batters already been picked up. So let's see what happen."
Will Faf du Plessis be picked at the IPL 2025 auction?

DC eye stability with Rahul

By the looks of it, Capitals have ticked their captaincy box after Pant's departure with KL Rahul being picked. "We were looking for stability in the top order, someone with experience who can build the innings. And, I think KL Rahul, given his record in the IPL, he's someone who's consistently given more than 400 runs every season," DC co-owner Parth Jindal said. "I think with the Kotla wicket, it is going to suit his game. We're very excited to have him. We have a very young batting lineup. Both KL and Axar are going to lead them and are going to guide them. KL's batting and experience will be a vital cog in the wheel."

All eyes on MI

The biggest surprise for me from yesterday was the fact that Mumbai Indians bought only four players, including the only overseas player in their roster so far. And their first pick was not until the sixth set, really. But it was not that they did not raise the paddle at all till then. They bid for as many as 18 players and ended up being the losing bidders on eight occasions. Quite clearly, they are the team who should be busy today. What does the team management think, though?
Mahela Jayawardene, back as their head coach, said MI were always ready to play the patient game.
"When we saw the list of players, that it’s two halves to this auction. So we knew that if we’re doing this route, we have to be patient. There’s another 400 or more players on the list. So we could pick and choose and there’s a lot of talent that we’re going to pick wisely.
"At the end of the day, the auction is not just for the players that are in the auction and the purses that we have, it’s to the players that we retain, the value that we put into those players. To be in that situation where we are in the top 3 in purses going into day 2 and at the same time we secured nine slots in our playing XI that gives us a lot of comfort in how we want to execute."

Day one round up

Phew! The first day of the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025 comes to a close. We have had 72 players sold today, with the rest of the slots being filled in the accelerated round tomorrow. Some of the key takeaways:

  • RCB have the most purse left (INR 30.65 crore) and also have their three RTMs intact
  • MI made the least purchase, adding just four players to the roster - Trent Boult, who is the only overseas players for them so far
  • CSK bolstered their spin attack by bringing back R Ashwin and Noor Ahmad
  • PBKS had the largest purse heading into the auction and they splurged like anything fetching Iyer, Chahal, Arshdeep, Macwell, Wadhera, Vyshak among others

Here's Venky Mysore on the Venky Iyer buy

"The auctions are this way only. At the end of the day, it is about the player you want and the type of player you want. It [the prices] surprises you all the time. When you have salary caps that keep going up, the prices will expand. For us, it was about keeping our core. We kept six players and have brought 2-3 players back from last year. That was the thinking. We definitely didn’t want to find ourselves in a situation where we would not want him back. But on an overall basis, it all balances out."

Here's Ponting on the latest PBKS recruits

Punjab Kings had a busy start to their IPL 2025 auction with big names in Shreyas Iyer (26.75 cr), Arshdeep Singh (18 cr), and Yuzvednra Chahal (18 cr). Here’s what head coach Ricky Ponting had to say on the big acquisitions.
On Shreyas Iyer
“I think we knew Shreyas, Pant and KL Rahul were going to attract big money. I wanted to work with Shreyas. I've worked with him before and he is a great guy and a great player. He'll be a great leader for our team if we decide to go that way, which I'm pretty sure we probably will. And obviously, he was the championship-winning captain last year. So there are lots of great things about bringing him to Punjab.”
On Arshdeep Singh
“We had certain targets coming into the auction as every team does. Arshdeep was obviously the first one. He's been in our franchise for a number of years. I was really keen to get him back. Left-arm fast bowler, obviously, with a great skill set with the new ball and the old ball and, you know, one of India's leading wicket-takers in T20 cricket. So he was a perfect fit for us to come back into the Punjab Kings.”
On Yuzvendra Chahal
“Yuzi is the highest quality Indian spinner in the auction, so, we wanted to fill certain gaps with the best players we possibly could. And yes, we spent a bit of money to get there, but what we're trying to do is rebuild this franchise basically from the ground up and you can't do that without the best players. So, we felt so far that the auction's gone exactly the way we wanted. We've got a bit of work to do in the back half this afternoon, but that's the fun of it.”

Andy Flower on Livingstone buy

"We are very happy to get Liam Livingstone. He is a very very dangerous player obviously huge power but very versatile as well, given that he bowls legspin and offspin. So having that spin addition to our attack is really nice to secure early in the auction. And the other thing I'd say about Livingston, and I've worked with him quite a lot before, certainly at the England Cricket Academy, what I see in him is a maturing player, and some of his international efforts recently shows that he's a maturing batsman who now can change gear up and down. And his ups very high, obviously, but he can also build innings and absorb pressure when he needs to. So that's been really nice to see recently. We're really happy to get him."

Here's Nagraj Gollapudi: Among these players, JFM is the most interesting name to look forward to. Only 22, JFM, who broke ABD’s record to register the fastest List A century in 29 balls, announced himself last IPL with two 15-ball fifties. He might have played just nine matches for DC, but displayed some outrageous hitting in powerplay where his strike rate of 250.94 was the highest for any batter to have played two or more overs in that phase. He also had the best balls-per-boundary (2.04) and best balls-per-six (5.95) count in the first six overs. Expect some strong bidding including from Punjab Kings though I suspect DC might RTM him.

      Reactions to marquee sets

Ricky Ponting, Punjab Kings: I haven’t spoken to him (Shreyas Iyer about captaincy) yet, I tried to call him before the auction but he didn’t pick up. He’s been a successful captain in IPL before, I worked with him 3for -4 years in Delhi and he was the championship winner last season. I’m delighted to work with him again, if he can do that for us in the IPL I’ll be pretty happy.
Shashwat Goenka, LSG: No matter how much you plan, things don’t always work out like that. This (getting Pant for 27 crore) was very well to our plan. It wasn’t really a magic number, we just wanted a number so that the RTM doesn’t get exercised.
Parthiv Patel, Gujarat Titans: Very happy to have Jos Buttler in our side. He can bat anywhere, he can keep as well, he can help Shubman also. We wanted to buy our no. 1 bowler and no. 1 batter from the marquee set and we have both.

        Ricky Ponting's 'Project Punjab'

Punjab Kings will be the third IPL franchise where Ricky Ponting will be the head coach after MI and DC. He was in conversation with other franchises as well in the lead-up to IPL 2025, but eventually signed with PBKS. Nagraj Gollapudi spoke to Ponting in Nottingham in Setpember.
Here's a snippet from the interview.
Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was "Project Punjab" which attracted me. It is a team that hasn't had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that's changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge. The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings that hopefully we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL. I mean, there's no doubting over the years that the Kings have had good players, have had good teams. They just haven't been able to win it yet. I have a longish-term deal there, and hopefully during that period of time we can win the IPL.
More recently, Ponting spoke to Star Sports about the auction. “I think there are three most crucial things with a successful auction. One's definitely making sure you stick to your strategy and not getting off that early on. I think being really calm and clear at the auction table is also a really important thing. And then communication on the day because, you know, you're working with the analysts, you're working with your owners. Communication is vital,” Ponting told the broadcaster.

        What are CSK up to?

AR Srikkanth, the former KKR and West Indies analyst, will sit on CSK's table. He has joined Super Kings' scouting team for the IPL (CSK), SA20 (JSK) and the MLC (TSK). He has a keen eye for talent and detail: for example, he scouted Kuldeep Yadav from the Buchi Babu pre-season tournament in Chennai in 2014 and recommended Kuldeep to Trevor Bayliss, who was KKR's coach at the time. Srikkanth has also coached in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). In the past, CSK's trends and patterns have been fairly predictable. Will the inclusion of Srikkanth buck that trend? Will be see some out-of-the-box picks from CSK in this auction?

        In the spotlight: KL Rahul

Serial No. 10. Marquee set 2. KL Rahul. A lot of the focus has been on him for the last few months, from his spot in India's Test side to news around retention. He was let go off by his former side LSG and here he is, now in the auction pool.
There is intrigue around where Rahul could go in the auction. RCB would probably love to have the Bengaluru localite on board. I think there could be interest from CSK for a middle-order role, plus the fact that ke can keep wickets, which could enable CSK to think and prepare for the after-Dhoni years. A Rahul freed up from the burden of captaincy can be the batter to watch, as evidenced from his returns for India in the middle order a couple of years ago.
And with that, I shall hand it over to Deiva for the next bit.

        Auction in Jeddah? Why?

It is the second IPL auction in a row that is being held outside India. Last year, Dubai played host to the mini auction. This time, the two-day mega auction will be held in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. What's with Saudi Arabia and venturing into cricket, which really is a fringe sport there?
        Matt Roller writes:

Saudi Arabia has a stated aim for India to be its biggest source of tourists by 2030. Hosting the auction - which was watched by over 20 million viewers last year on Star Sports - will ensure at least two full days of publicity in India, in addition to the regular Visit Saudi plugs during TV coverage of last year's IPL.

It only takes a glance at the wider landscape to realise the potential ramifications of Saudi investment. The kingdom has already been a major sporting disruptor: it now dominates the boxing landscape, with Riyadh hosting world heavyweight title fights between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk. The Saudi Pro League has signed leading footballers like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema from European giants Manchester United and Real Madrid.

        In focus: overseas stars

A total of 411 overseas players have registered themselves for the auction for IPL 2025, including 31 from Associate nations. They will be vying for 70 possible slots. There's Jos Buttler, whom Rajasthan Royals released, among those and so too is Mitchell Starc, whom KKR got last auction for a record price. Then there is the hard-hitting Liam Livingstone, whose stocks are on the rise in the last couple of years and could be one of the most expensive buys. Kagiso Rabada may not feature in all of South Africa's T20Is but he is sure in demand in the franchise circuit. All of them are in the marquee lists that will kickstart the auction today.
Nagraj Gollapudi compiles a list of players who could rake in the big bucks, but do watch the video to know his pick as one of the dark horses.

        Get acquainted with 13-year-old Suryavanshi

At the other end of the age spectrum, there's Bihar's Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who at 13 is the youngest player to be shortlisted for an IPL auction. He had made his Ranji debut when he was 12 and was more recently picked in the India Under-19s squad that played four-dayers against a visiting Australian side in Chennai. In the first four-dayer at Chepauk, he clattered a 58-ball hundred. Suryavanshi also scored a triple-century in the Randhir Verma Under-19 ODI tournament played in Bihar. Syed Hussain from ESPNcricinfo's Hindi team caught up with the teenager last month. Read Suryavanshi's story here (in Hindi).

        Jimmy Anderson, anyone?

        Here's a snippet from Matt Roller's piece:
It really ought to be a non-starter. James Anderson has not played a T20 match in the last decade and was struggling to keep up with the format even then, leaking 52 runs from four wicketless overs in the 2014 Blast final. He has not bowled with a white ball in a competitive match since 2019, and has not played in any format since his farewell Test in July.
But there remains an outside chance that, at 42, Anderson will earn his first IPL deal this weekend, having entered the auction at a base price of INR 1.25 crore (£118,000). Moeen Ali was only half-joking when he suggested that he wanted to sign him in the Hundred last summer, and bowlers like Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have shown there can still be a role for a powerplay specialist in the IPL - even in the Impact Player era.

Will there be a 25-crore buy?

Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc broke records in the previous auction. There's a good chance that a new record will be set in this mega-auction. Nagraj Gollapudi explains why
There are two likely reasons this could happen. Firstly, Rishabh Pant. Pant is listed in the first set of marquee players that will ring in the auction on Sunday. He will be among the most sought-after players because several teams are on the lookout for an Indian captain-cum-wicketkeeper. Pant is the first big-name India player to come up in an auction in a long time, and the expectation is that the teams with the biggest purses - PBKS (INR 110.5 crore), RCB (INR 83 crore) and LSG (INR 69 crore) - will bid for him.
Then there is DC (INR 73 crore), the franchise Pant played for since 2016 and led since 2021 until last season. Pant opted to head to the auction after retention talks with DC failed, which he recently clarified had nothing to do with money. DC still have the option to buy him back as they have two right-to-match (RTM) options available. And it is the modified RTM rule that might just escalate the bids.

Meet the new additions to the auction list

Jofra Archer: The England fast bowler has been added back to the final list after his name didn't originally feature in the short list that had been sent to the franchises last weekend. He will now be part of the first set of fast bowlers (Set 6) which currently has seven quicks and will come up for bidding on the first day. ESPNcricinfo understands Archer and his representatives have been in discussions with the ECB and the BCCI this week, seeking clarification on the repercussions in the event that he was not part of the shortlist. The IPL has introduced new regulations for this auction cycle, stipulating that players who have previously appeared in the league but do not register for a mega-auction would be unable to register for the subsequent mini-auction. A separate regulation says that a player who is signed at an auction and then withdraws without a legitimate reason will face a two-year ban.
Saurabh Netravalkar: The Mumbai-born left-arm seamer who is now living the American dream has also been added to the final list. He was among the heroes for USA during their home World Cup and in the game against India, he took out both Kohli and Rohit. It will be a special homecoming for him if he gets picked by Mumbai Indians. But, hey, Ponting, the new Punjab Kings coach, will also have an eye on him. Under Ponting, Netravalkar emerged as the highest wicket-taker in Washington Freedom's run to the MLC title earlier this year.
Hardik Tamore: Tamore, 27, is an uncapped wicketkeeper-batter from Mumbai. Even ahead of the 2022 mega-auction, he was belatedly added to the list. He has played 11 T20s so far, scoring 65 runs at a strike rate of 101.56. In first-class cricket, he has hit three centuries and two fifties in 21 innings. He is currently with Mumbai's SMAT side in Hyderabad.

        RTM card

There was no Right-to-Match card at the previous mega-auction in 2022. How will it impact this auction?
The IPL teams were allowed to retain up to six players this time - of which a maximum of five can be capped and a maximum of two can be uncapped. The six could either be retained outright ahead of the auction, or can be bought back using Right-to-Match (RTM) options at the auction, or a combination of both.
So here's how the RTM options work: If a player has been bought by another franchise at the mega auction, the franchise that he was part of in IPL 2024 can step in at the end of the bidding process and buy back their player using the RTM option by matching the highest bid. After that, the franchise that made the winning bid will be given another opportunity to raise the bid to whatever amount they wish. In that case, the player's previous team will have to match the increased bid to buy back their player.
Having retained just two players, PBKS have the most RTM options (four) at the auction. RCB, who retained three players, have three, while Delhi Capitals, who retained four players, have two. Five teams - MI, CSK, GT, SRH and LSG - retained five players each and have just one RTM option at the auction, while RR and KKR have no RTM options.
There is of course no limit on the number of players a franchise can buy back if they place the highest bids for them during regular bidding at the auction.

        IPL. Mega. Auction

Hello. How you doin? The IPL mega-auction is almost upon us. We're about five hours away from the start, but I know you've been expecting us. Five-hundred-and-seventy-seven players are up for grabs in this two-day event in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah as the league ventures into new territories. There are also some new names in the market, with a number of leagues popping up every year, and of course there are some old, familiar names who have made the IPL what it is right now. The auction dynamics often make this event more intriguing than the competition itself. It sets up teams for years together.
And, there's some perverse joy in knowing what others are earning, right? So, temme where’s Rishabh Pant heading to and for what price? I’m Deivarayan Muthu and I’ll soon be joined by S Sudarshanan and Ashish Pant to bring you a blow-by-blow account of the auction. We will also be having some of the best minds in T20 cricket, including Tom Moody and S Sriram, on our live show from 3pm IST. The a(u)ction will begin at 3.30pm IST.
