First used by Wakefield CC in 1873, it was officially opened on July 10 when United South of England played a local XXII. The All-England XI visited the following summer, and in 1878 Yorkshire played a home game there, but it was obvious that the ground was far too small and the organisers lost money. Yorkshire 2nd XI played on and off through to the 1960s but it was never going to be a first-class venue. After the war the land became a multi-sports centre, and in 1989 Wakefield CC played their last game. The ground thrived as the home of Wakefield RFC but professionalism scuppered the club and club folded. The old cricket pavilion was demolished in 2003.
