The future of T20 leagues

T20 has been seen as a vehicle for cricket's expansion but the prospect of domestic leagues cannibalising each other - while also threatening the relevance of bilateral international competition - has increasingly become a live issue for boards and administrators. In early 2024, the strained schedule saw fixture clashes between the Big Bash, SA20, ILT20, BPL and PSL, while the rise of franchise tournaments in North America has caused conflict with the Hundred and the CPL. In the absence of agreed windows for anything other than ICC tournaments, uncertainty and short-termism reigned.
