In January 2024, he earned his first call-up to the senior side as back-up wicketkeeper for Afghanistan's Test against Sri Lanka, but although he didn't get a red-ball debut, he played his first T20I on the tour, scoring an unbeaten 16 off eight balls to help his side win a close game by three runs in Dambulla.

He batted well in the T20Is against Ireland in March that year, and subsequently made it to the 2024 T20 World Cup squad. Although he did not get a game at the tournament, Ishaq has since been in the fringes of the national T20I team and, in 2025, was selected for the Asia Cup in the UAE.
