pulled behind square! 4 off 1 for Stoinis and Australia win! Short on leg, he swivels on a controlled pull to find the rope
New Zealand vs Australia, 1st T20I at Mount Maunganui, NZ vs AUS, Oct 01 2025 - Match Result
Australia won by 6 wickets (with 21 balls remaining)
Australia go 1-0 up after Marsh's brilliance. Robinson's outstanding century was overwhelmed in the end. New Zealand didn't have enough contributors elsewhere. The two sides front up again on Friday for game two but the weather forecast is not good with showers expected. Fingers crossed we get a game in. Please join us then. In the meantime tune into our coverage of the women's ODI World Cup where Australia and New Zealand are facing off in Indore.
10.30pm Presentation
Mitch Marsh is Player of the match: "It's really important in a three-match series to start off with a win. Nice to contribute. Heady and I have a great relationship off the field and tonight was a lot of fun with him. The way were playing has happened organically. We do have a lot of power in our batting line-up, hopefully it can continue. I thought we started really well with the ball tonight. The most pleasing thing was the way we handled the wind. We defended to the big side and backed our skill. We've been playing some really good cricket. It's a long build to the World Cup but nice to start well here."
Michael Bracewell: "In the powerplays in both innings we fell behind in the game. We did well as a batting unit to put a competitive total on the board. Ultimately Mitch and Travis took the game away from us. I think we can take a lot of positives. Those partnerships through the middle were particularly impressive. Tim Robinson played beautifully. He and Daryl took the game on from a difficult position."
10.24pm A cruise for Australia. Mitchell Marsh was sensational scoring 85 off 43. Marsh and Travis Head put on 67 in 5.3 overs to set the tone. Short and David made excellent contributions. New Zealand's bowlers had no answer to Australia's power. Australia hit 29 boundaries to New Zealand's 17.
Sampath Bandarupalli: The chasing team won for only the second time in 13 completed men's T20Is at Mount Maunganui. The other instance was New Zealand's win vs Bangladesh in a rain-affected game in 2023.
Stoinis out there to get one run
Carey makes a mess of this! He backed away, gets a slower bouncer, he shapes to pull and then bails on the shot and just loops it off the face of the bat to short third!
One to win
spooned just short of deep square! Short into the body, he miscues a pull but gets away with it
Foulkes to bowl with two to win
Matthew: "It's all just too easy for the Aussies. NZ really missed Ferguson's thunderbolts tonight."
darted outside leg, he punches off the back foot to deep midwicket
Three to win
that was what he was trying to avoid. Short on leg and he pummels it over deep square! Too short, David sits back and pounds it
flighted wider of off and this one is called wide
tossed up wide of off, he leaves
tossed up wide of off, he sweeps hard along the ground to deep midwicket
fired way down leg, Seifert fumbles, they run an extra
David might try and end this with three blows this over
darted into middle, he drives to long-on
flighted, 78kph, some turn outside off, he leans out to defend
Bracewell around the wicket to the left-hander
Kiran: "I suspect Tim David was telling Mitch to go for his hundred. I don't think they needed to though, a bit silly but hopefully (from my Aussie POV) no major harm done for the overall result." Not sure Marsh got that memo. He wanted the run. A bit of miscommunication
launched over midwicket! Sounded like a gun shot off the bat. Length slower ball but it just sits up on a tee in his hitting arc and he clubs it miles
short ball at the body, 129kph, he tries to pull and it comes off the body and runs through third
charges at a length ball and misses trying to glide to third
top edge fine! Bouncer from around the wicket, he pulls and it flies off the top edge fine
Carey at No.5. A very unusual spot for him but a chance to take an opportunity
picks out deep cover! It should have been David on strike. Wide half volley, Marsh is down on one knee to carve it flat and straight to deep cover. Marsh will be annoyed
low full toss, Marsh drives to long-on and calls one and David sends him back. No idea why
Nick Mac: "Any of the NZ bowlers hit over 140k? Feel like we would have been better picking Sears, not to mention Sodhi's stats against Aus " No one really has. The wind has made that difficult. Jamieson is obviously capable
back of a length slower ball on leg, it hits the splice of the bat as he tries to knock it leg side
full on leg, he drives to long-on
Niraj Kheria: "Australia already have 30 runs more in boundaries at the end of 12 overs. I think that sums up the game. "
short on middle, he pulls along the ground to deep midwicket
