another short ball outside leg, another pull, and this single hands Australia the win. Dwarshuis nearly takes his eyes off the ball while putting the ball away. Australia go 1-0 up in the five-match series, but not without a few hiccups
West Indies vs Australia, 1st T20I at Kingston, WI vs AUS, Jul 20 2025 - Match Result
Australia won by 3 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)
What would have been had the substitute fielder Andrew caught Abbott? Australia were 183 for 7 at that stage, and two overs remained. But much before that miss, West Indies lost 6 for 37 with the bat to limit themselves to 189. Then they had Australia at 78 for 4 with the ball. But the failure to put the opposition under the pump means West Indies fall behind early in the series. Join us for the second T20I in two days' time, though, in what will be Andre Russell's farewell game in international cricket. Until then, see you!
Mitchell Marsh: "Really good performance. From the way West Indies started, they put us under pressure. To pull the West Indies back, it was fantastic. All the boys put on the pressure. They've played a lot of cricket. Anytime you get a young player performs like that for Australia... The bowling performance in the back end, and just the way we kept going with the bat... nice to win."
Shai Hope: "We left ourselves 20 or 30 runs short in the back end. With the ball, we didn't take as many wickets as we wanted to. We've got some very good batting in the lower order. Some missed execution [from our bowlers]."
Mitchell Owen is the Player of the Match: "I'm firstly happy to get a win. For me, I've been trying to play positive for the last six to eight months. Today was no different. Honestly, not too much changed. The only difference is five fielders out [while batting in the middle order]."
Time for the presentations
Rio: "Ben Dwarshuis is my MOM. His 3-wicket over started a collapse." --- I suppose it will be Owen for his counterattacking fifty, and a wicket
10.31pm Nine sixes vs 17: that's where the game was won and lost. There was a time when West Indies out-sixed oppositions in T20s - that has been their style for years, you'd think - but tonight, Australia hit nearly double the number of sixes West Indies managed, and that made all the difference. Typical T20 batting from a newish line-up even as the dimensions at the ground helped. The stars of the chase were half-centurions Green and Owen, who, on debut, confirms his potential although he batted at No. 6 instead of his usual position as opener. Hang around for the presentations.
shorter side of a length, and wide of off. Cut away to deep cover point
short ball again on leg. He looks to half-pull it, but gets it off his body towards point
short delivery just outside off, and punched down the ground. Joseph should have stopped that to his right to not allow a single to long-on
Fine leg in, mid-on out.
short in length, and cramps him for room. He backs away and punches to point, from where the throw is wide at the striker's end. Abbott wanted a second there but was sent back, and as a result, Australia get an overthrow
dropped at fine leg!! It is the sub fielder Andrew out there. Holder has his hands on his head, and why not? He bowled it short, and Abbott swivelled to pull it away. The ball went off the top edge, and was put down in what could be pretty painful for West Indies
Duke: "West Indies can't let Dwarshuis get an easy single"
angles this across from over the wicket, and bowls pretty full and wide of off. Driven to deep cover point
a free swing of the bat, and the ball goes off the leading edge to deep third. The ball was fullish and outside off, as Abbott looked to heave across the line
Abbott in
gone!! Edged behind to Hope! Is there life in the game yet? The crowd at Sabina Park certainly thinks so. Slower delivery from Holder, who bowls this on a short of a length on off or thereabouts. The ball turns away after pitching, and Connolly, who looked to play a shot somewhere between a swat and a slap, ended up toe-edging it to Hope
Hayes: "Owen robbed of a century by batting at 6."
a wide yorker outside off, and left alone. That was close to being wide, but isn't called so
From around to Connolly
short ball pitching around middle, and ending just outside off. Slapped to deep-backward point
Holder back.
pulled to deep-backward square leg! Short delivery just outside off, and Connolly swivels to pull hard at it and leave Joseph wondering where the fielder was
G-Rant: "Australia have to be sensible here. This isn't over."
beaten!! A Test-match delivery in the death overs of a T20. Short of a length, and angled in to pitch just outside off. But it shapes away to beat the outside edge as he looked to jab
From around.
short ball almost cramps him for room on leg, as Dwarshuis pulls towards deep midwicket
Dwarshuis
taken at long-on! Owen's six-laden innings on debut ends. Slower ball from Joseph, who went short this time. Owen looked to repeat the shot from the last ball, but failed to clear the boundary this time
bam! Fifty for Owen! His parents and girlfriend are up in the stands, with a thumbs-up. Another length delivery from Joseph, but the line this time is on middle. Owen gets his front leg out of the way to clobber it back down the ground
bowls a slower delivery on a length, and wide of off, after spotting Owen make room. Owen ends up spooning it back towards Joseph
Joseph back
on the roof!! The cameraman loses sight of the ball, which eventually dribbles down after being dumped down the ground. Full and slow from Chase, who bowled around off, as Connolly seemed to opon the face of the bat to thrash it back
another one goes on with the arm, as Chase bowls shortish and around off. Cut away on the bounce to point
on the bounce to long-on. Chase bowls a low full toss on middle and leg, and Owen looks to gently chip it down
